Everton searching for their first point against confident Nottingham Forest
Everton 1-1 Nottingham Forest
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Walton, Liverpool, Goodison Park
Bet NowWhile Everton have strengthened in the transfer market, they still look a shell of the side that finished 10th in the 2020/21 season under Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Frank Lampard is still trying to motivate his squad and it won’t have helped losing to his long-term rival, Steven Gerrard, last weekend.
Although it’s early in the season, you sense Everton could be in for a long, hard campaign if they don’t manage to improve going forward.
Nottingham Forest gathered an impressive three points against West Ham last weekend, claiming their first Premier League victory in almost 25 years.
They will be aware that promoted sides always struggle, so every point they claim is welcome.
Can they claim another here?
Reasons to be cheerful:
Have strengthened in defence
Should have more of the ball against Forest
Reasons to be fearful:
Won only one of their last five league games, stretching back to last season
Could be set to lose Anthony Gordon to Chelsea
Everton’s squad is like a set of scales that don’t quite balance right now.
For all the improvements they have made defensively, such as signing Burnley’s Tarkowski and Wolves’ Coady, they continue to look weaker in attack.
Calvert-Lewin is injured, Richarlison has departed for Tottenham and now Anthony Gordon is being linked with Chelsea. They will have to recruit in attack to prevent them from being dragged into another relegation battle.
Considering they’ve lost their first two games of the season, it doesn’t look great for Everton right now. They have started the season in the same vein of form as last campaign and they desperately need a win.
Against Forest, they should see more of the ball. Can they use it effectively?
Star Man – Alex Iwobi
The former Arsenal player can trouble Forest with his direct runs, but will need support from his teammates.
Reasons to be cheerful
First win of the season can inspire them
Players have huge belief in manager Steve Cooper
Reasons to be fearful
Their opponents are desperate for a win
No guarantee that new signings will work
As we know, no club has been more active in the transfer market than Nottingham Forest.
A total of 15 players have entered the doors at Forest, including three in the last week. While a good number of players have also left, this shows that Forest are massively hoping their new signings will do well.
There is never a great deal of time in the Premier League. A few bad results and your season can go downhill. Therefore, these new signings have to bed in quickly, otherwise it could start to look bad for them.
At least they now have their first win on the board, from a gritty, determined performance against West Ham last weekend.
They will need more where that came from this season.
Star Man – Taiwo Awoniyi
Scored the winner against West Ham in his first-ever Premier League start. Can he make it two from two against Everton?
Forest will start quickly
Everton should eventually have more possession
Few chances at either end
This has the makings of a close game, especially with the home team scrapping for points and confidence.
The longer they spend on zero points, the more restless their fans will become, as will the players. They could badly do with a win here.
For Forest, this represents a good opportunity for more points, especially with Tottenham and Manchester City coming up as their next opponents.
A scrappy goal would work for either team, but a draw is the most likely.
