Everton need a strong finish to the season if they are to claim European football next season, with their current position of 8th unlikely to be enough to see them qualify for the Europa League.

With only two wins from their last nine games, they have seen themselves fall behind other chasing clubs such as Liverpool, West Ham and Tottenham and have been inconsistent at both ends of the pitch in recent months.

With a run-in schedule that features the sides both bottom and top of the league, you would expect that inconsistency to continue right to the very end.

Sheffield United cannot wait for the season to end, even though it does mean relegation. If their season up until Chris Wilder leaving had been bad, the results and performances since that point have been truly dreadful.

They managed a solitary win at home to Brighton a couple of weeks back, but other than that have been poor and face the possibility of ending the season with their current points tally of 17.

Everton FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DWLWD

Reasons to be cheerful:

Beat Sheffield United earlier this season

Can leapfrog Spurs here if results go in their favour

Reasons to be fearful:

Two wins from nine league games

Have lost eight of their 17 home games this season – their most since 1993-94

Everton’s season is rather fizzling out in disappointing fashion just at the stage when it should be at its most exciting.

The club have the possibility of qualifying for Europe next season, although a drop in form, fitness and motivation seem to be derailing what started out to be a great campaign.

Should they beat Sheffield United here, they could overtake Spurs should that result go in Everton’s favour, while they could move level on points with West Ham. A 6th place finish should be enough to qualify for the Europa League.

They will also be boosted by the return of James Rodriguez, who has missed the last three games due to a calf injury.

Star Man – Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Has 21 goals for Everton this season, but his most important could be yet to come if the Toffees are to qualify for Europe.

Sheffield United FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): LLWLL

Reasons to be cheerful:

A good time to play an inconsistent Everton

Can’t play any worse than they have recently

Reasons to be fearful:

Defeat would equal the 29-game record losses for the season

With 18 goals, they are two short of the record fewest in a season

While Sheffield United’s season technically can’t get any worse – they sit at the very bottom of the league with just 17 points from 35 games – there are a couple of records that they would rather not capture.

The first could be achieved this weekend, with a defeat ensuring that they equal the record number of defeats in a Premier League season with 29.

In their remaining three games, they must score at least twice to ensure they don’t score the fewest number of goals in a season either. Considering they’ve scored one goal from their last five games, the odds are not in their favour.

Here, they face three new injury concerns with Sander Berge, Oliver Burke and Ethan Ampadu unlikely to play again this season after picking up knocks in the last week.

Star Man – David McGoldrick

Has been the one shining light for United this season – can he save their blushes here?

     Everton are heavy favourites

     Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score

Can Sheffield United get a much needed goal?

Despite Everton’s inconsistencies this season, it’s not hard to see that they are favourites here.

Sheffield United’s dreadful form has only become worse over the past month or so, and with light at the end of the tunnel, they will just want to get it over and done with.

Everton to win 2-0
