Everton facing uphill battle to qualify for Europe and welcome a mixed Wolves side
Everton 1-1 Wolves
Tournament: Premier League 2020-2021 | Venue: Walton, Liverpool, Goodison Park
Everton’s poor home form struck once again as they were defeated by bottom club Sheffield United in a surprisingly bad performance for Carlo Ancelotti’s men.
Their chances of qualifying for Europe next season now appear lost, with a three-point gap to both Tottenham and West Ham above them.
The Toffees were 2nd in the table on 26th December after beating Sheffield United in their first meeting of the season, however this defeat proves just how inconsistent they have been in the second half of the season and now face a disappointing end to the campaign.
Wolves have also suffered through a tough season, with a league position of 12th showcasing a downturn on their 7th position finish last year.
They will be happy for the season to end, to ensure that they can recruit fresh faces for next season and build up some confidence once more.
Form Guide (all comps): WLWDL
Reasons to be cheerful:
Having fans back will help their poor home record
Will expect a response after Sheffield United defeat
Reasons to be fearful:
Only Fulham have earned fewer points at home in 2021
Scored just two goals in last four games
Everton’s home form has been the thorn in their side this season, earning just five wins from their 18 games at Goodison Park.
They will welcome back fans to the stadium for this game, something which they hope will improve their fortunes here. Only Fulham have earned fewer than the Toffees’ six points at home since the start of 2021, and it’s clear that this form has prevented Everton from really challenging for a top four spot.
A once free-flowing attack has failed in recent weeks, scoring just twice from their last four games. Calvert-Lewin’s early season form has drifted, while the injuries to Rodriguez haven’t helped.
Can they earn a much-needed victory here?
Star Man – Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Only Romelu Lukaku has scored more goals in a Premier League season than Calvert-Lewin’s 16 this campaign. Can he finish the season in the same way he started?
Form Guide (all comps): WLDWL
Reasons to be cheerful:
A good time to play Everton right now
Are in better scoring form than their opponents
Reasons to be fearful:
Lost to Everton earlier in the season
Inconsistency means it’s impossible to say which Wolves will turn up
Wolves are one of those clubs who are just desperate for the season to end as quickly as possible.
While it has not been a complete disaster – in the sense that they have comfortably avoided a relegation scrap – the fact that this will be their lowest finish to a league season since they regained promotion shows the disappointment.
They’ve missed their best player Raul Jimenez for over half the season, although only Neto and Neves have scored more goals than the Mexican, showing just how badly they’ve struggled at the top of the pitch.
Wolves may sense that this is a good time to play Everton, with the Toffees’ poor home form, but with such inconsistencies affecting them right now, who can say which Wolves will turn up?
Star Man – Adama Traore
Scored in Wolves recent win over Brighton, can he end the season positively?
Can either side put their scoring woes behind them?
Everton will be boosted by return of fans
Wolves will be hard to beat as usual
Everton will point to the absence of fans this season as a reason behind their poor home form, although the return of fans this week is not guaranteed to help matters.
The Toffees have suffered through a mixed second half to the season and it’ll take more than fans to completely turn that around.
Wolves have actually been the better side recently in terms of scoring goals, but will approach this game with the intention of not losing.
With all that considered, this could end as a draw.
Everton 1-1 Wolves
