Manchester City did not take long to return to winning form, and did so in style by thrashing Southampton 5-2 in midweek, taking their lead at the top of the table to 14 points.

With such an extensive and expensive squad at his disposal, Pep Guardiola can afford to mix and match his players to the requirements of the opponents without lowering the quality of his team.

No doubt he will take Fulham seriously, though it goes without saying that he will have one eye on their Champions League tie next week.

Fulham have done brilliantly to drag themselves back into contention to stay in the Premier League. They are now level on points with Brighton, with Newcastle just a point further ahead.

Judging on their form over the past couple of months, the Cottagers’ form should save them this season, though there are still a number of games to go.

Fulham FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DWDLW

Reasons to be cheerful:

Their form over the past six games is the 5th best in the league

Have only conceded twice in their past seven games

Reasons to be fearful:

Cottagers have lost last 10 matches against City

Home record is the joint worst in the league

Fulham shocked the world by beating Liverpool last weekend, even with the Reds’ form nowhere near their best.

Indeed, their performances have been good recently, and their positive results have pushed them up level with 17th place and safety, although they will be aware that more work is needed to claim safety.

They have a decent run of fixtures coming up, with Leeds, Villa, Wolves and Arsenal upcoming before the end of April. Should they continue to earn points at their current rate, it’s likely that they’ll overtake Brighton and perhaps Newcastle while their at it.

Here against City, there is little chance of them repeating their miracle at Anfield last weekend. This is a tougher test, against a tougher team, and they’ll spend most of the game defending.

Star Man – Ademola Lookman

He’s been directly involved in Fulham’s four most recent goals at Craven Cottage.

Reasons to be cheerful:

Back to winning ways by thrashing Saints in midweek

12 consecutive away victories in all competitions

Reasons to be fearful:

Could have one eye on their European tie

Will be aware of how Fulham shocked Liverpool last weekend

A short, sharp shock has perhaps done Manchester City the world of good, when they lost against neighbours Manchester United last weekend.

It seems to have refocused the players’ minds as they were fantastic in beating Southampton 5-2 in midweek.

As usual, they were able to rest and rotate several key players, helping to keep their squad fresh for the challenges that will come from being in four tournaments. The likes of Sterling, Jesus, Rodri and Cancelo could all return to the fold here.

Another extra incentive is that they could even go 17 points clear of 2nd place with a win, as both Leicester and Manchester United play 24 hours later.

They must ward against complacency of course, with City’s second leg Champions League tie against Borussia a few days later.

Star Man – Ilkay Gündogan

The German could be rested, but he is in red-hot form, with 10 goals from 12 appearances so far in 2021.

     City will likely dominate possession

     Fulham will stay compact

If City score early, it’s game over

Understandably, City are huge favourites here. There are 42 points and 17 places between the two sides right now, and the away side can practically put any side out there and still expect to win.

Fulham have shown, by beating Liverpool, that they can pull off a shock result, but that is unlikely here.

There only hope is to stay compact, and hope that City have their eyes on other prizes.
