This fixture was built up to be a relegation decider – an absolute life or death situation between two of the season’s biggest strugglers up until that point.

Fulham and Newcastle were just a point apart at the start of March, and with 10 games left to play, no one could have predicted with certainty who would come out on top over the remainder of the season.

As it happened, Fulham’s campaign rather fizzled out following that brief period of optimism, with seven defeat from the next nine, and no wins since that miraculous 1-0 victory over Liverpool at the end of February.

On the other hand, Newcastle have gone from strength to strength, with the ownership keeping faith in Steve Bruce’s management rewarded with four wins from their last seven. They could still finish as low as 17th, or as high as 12th depending on results around them.

Either way, it’s a positive end to the season for the Magpies.

Fulham FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DLLLD

Original predicted finish: 20th

Likely finish: 18th

Reasons to be cheerful:

Will want to give their fans a positive end to the season

Earned a draw with Magpies earlier in the season

Reasons to be fearful:

Have gone longest in the league without victory (nine games)

Game will be a reminder of what could have been for Fulham

This game will serve as a reminder for manager Scott Parker of what could have been for Fulham, had their form not plummeted towards the back end of this season.

When just a point behind the Magpies, Fulham would have hoped to press on from there and pull away from danger – if they had just kept up their form they would have done so easily.

True, since that point in time they’ve had one of the most difficult fixture schedules of any team in the league, having to face Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, City and United all within the space of two months

As it stands, they will return to the Championship after just one year in the Premier League, like West Brom below them.

Star Man – Bobby Reid

Made an assist for the goal against Manchester United in their last game and has been Fulham’s best player overall this season.

Newcastle United Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DLWLW

Original predicted finish: 9th

Likely finish: 13th

Reasons to be cheerful:

Positive end of season has brought more optimism around club

Could finish as high as 12th with other results going in their favour

Reasons to be fearful:

Will they still be motivated for this game?

Just one win from last six meetings with Fulham

What a signing Joe Willock has been for Newcastle in the second half of this season.

Only joining on loan from Arsenal in January, the youngster has now scored in each of his last six appearances for the club, only the third Newcastle player to do so in the Premier League.

Their position has been helped by others of course – Saint-Maximin has contributed in patches, and when Callum Wilson has been available he’s picked up important goals for them.

The fact that Newcastle could match, or even better, their 13th place finish last season would be nothing short of incredible based on their struggles for much of the season.

Star Man – Joe Willock

One of Newcastle’s main goals over the summer will be trying to convince Willock to stay again for another season. He’s been terrific for them.

Can Willock score for a seventh consecutive game?

Just how motivated will either side be here?

Newcastle have more quality going forward

The fact that Fulham will have some fans back here for the first time in a while could inspire them to a positive end-of-season performance, even though they know it’ll be the Championship for them next year.

Newcastle have a great opportunity to finish in a far higher position than many predicted not too long ago. With their quality in attack, they are arguably favourites to win this one.

Newcastle to win 1-0
