Fulham strolled out as comfortable winners away to Crystal Palace in their last game, scoring three times and earning a well-deserved three points.

It was a win that keeps them in the top half of the table, ahead of the likes of Brentford and Aston Villa and on the coattails of Chelsea and Liverpool.

They’ve outscored every team below them this season, as well as one or two above them, and know that they have the firepower to trouble any opponent, especially at home.

On the other hand, Southampton are in deep trouble. Firmly rooted to the bottom of the league, Nathan Jones has lost his first two games as manager.

He needs to settle upon his preferred line-up quickly and try to implement his ideas before it’s too late. They are only two points from safety but that could change rapidly.

Fulham FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have scored 82 goals in 2022, their highest since 2000 when they netted 85

Confidence will be sky-high after impressive away win over Palace

Reasons to be fearful:

Won just one of their last five home league games

Beaten Southampton just once in their last 11 league meetings

Fulham have been surprising people with their fantastic results all season, so maybe it is time we start taking them for what they are – a well-balanced team with some excellent players who deserve their success.

Marco Silva has built a talented team at Craven Cottage, one who blasted through the Championship last season, and has managed to transfer that success to the Premier League.

There are tough times to come this season, but he’ll take heart from how positive they have been in every match. The Cottagers have scored in 14 of their 17 games and rarely taken a backward step.

Now, they have an opportunity to win consecutive games and, if other results go their way, possibly lift themselves above the likes of Chelsea and Brighton.

Star Man – Aleksandar Mitrovic

The Serbian continues to play through the pain of an ongoing foot problem, but it doesn’t seem to hamper his performances. His goal against Palace means he now has 10 goals in 13 games for Fulham this season.

Southampton FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Don’t often lose to Fulham over the years

Bella-Kotchap could return to the team

Reasons to be fearful

Last away win over Fulham was back in 2014

Lost eight of their last 10 away league matches

Nathan Jones gave Southampton fans much-needed news that Armel Bella-Kotchap should be ready to return to the team after building up his match fitness once again.

He was an unused member of Germany’s World Cup squad and as such, returned needing to spend time on a football pitch once again.

Bella-Kotchap was an important part of Southampton’s team earlier in the season and his ability will be needed to stabilise a shaky backline.

Nathan Jones hasn’t hit the ground running as Southampton boss in the way that new managers often do.

The stats are looking poor for the Saints – eight defeats from their last 10 on the road, four consecutive defeats in the league and just two wins from their last 15 games in London.

They need a huge performance here.

Star Man – James Ward-Prowse

The midfielder continues to give his best for the Saints, despite playing in a very average team. He has three goals and two assists this season, but offers so much more than the numbers suggest.

Fulham will come at Saints with lots of confidence

     Can Southampton handle Mitrovic?

An early goal could destroy Saints’ morale

When at the bottom of the table, you need one or two things to go your way. An early goal would do nicely, as would a couple of key refereeing decisions in the game.

For things to go their way, however, Southampton will need to take the game to Fulham in a way that they haven’t all season so far.

Fulham will be full of confidence after a big win away to Palace and, now in front of their own fans, should claim three points here too.
