Fulham running out of time to grab passage to safety against scrappy Wolves
Fulham 1-1 Wolves
Tournament: Premier League 2020-2021 | Venue: Fulham, London, Craven Cottage
Bet NowFulham and Wolves both battled hard last weekend, despite eventually ending up on the losing side in their respective games.
The Cottagers played well for much of their match against Aston Villa, and took the lead just after the hour. With only 10 minutes remaining, Villa turned on the power to knock three goals past the 18th placed side in quick succession.
While Fulham can take heart from the way in which they played, it won’t do their league position any favours – they remain three points behind Newcastle, with just seven games of the season left.
Wolves found themselves in the opposite position, falling behind early on in their game against West Ham, with things getting worse before half time, losing 3-0.
Despite rallying in the second half, scoring twice, they still ended up on the losing side. The are nine points ahead of their opponents this weekend, and therefore probably safe from relegation.
Form Guide (all comps): LWLLL
Reasons to be cheerful:
Showed courage in their game against Villa
Will still feel confident of catching Newcastle in 17th
Reasons to be fearful:
Only have seven games left to save their season
Arsenal and Chelsea are their next two fixtures
Make no mistake about it, seven games are plenty of time to turn things around in football. It’s not impossible for West Brom, five points further behind than Fulham, to get out of it yet.
Three points is the gap to safety, and Fulham will be confident of earning a win somewhere along the line. Their key concern will be their remaining fixture list, which includes Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United to follow in the next few weeks.
Fortunately, Newcastle’s fixture list is arguably even more daunting, with West Ham, Liverpool, Arsenal, Leicester and Manchester City to come.
Against Aston Villa, they were good value for their lead, and should not alter their tactics here. Unfortunately, Lookman is likely to be out here due to a hamstring issue picked up last week.
Star Man – Aleksandar Mitrovic
Scored his first Premier League since 19th September in Fulham’s last game. He must now kick on and produce again here.
Form Guide (all comps): DLDLL
Reasons to be cheerful:
Joao Moutinho could be fit to return after injury
Showed character to almost come back from 3-0 down
Reasons to be fearful:
Have lost their last two on the bounce
Fulham have more to play for
There is no getting away from how disappointing Wolves’ season has been.
They have finished 7th in each of their two seasons in the Premier League up until this point, and may have expected to push on higher in this campaign, only to suffer from a mediocre set of performances.
In fairness, most sides would have been demoralised at having gone 3-0 down inside 40 minutes, as they did against West Ham, but the Wanderers pulled themselves together at half-time and almost produced a great comeback.
They have found it desperately difficult to win matches this season, and are on a run of five without victory here, including three defeats from their last four.
With Raul Jimenez, and now Jonny, out for the remainder of the season, they must play on with the squad that they have.
Star Man – Fabio Silva
The 18-year-old provided a glimpse of his ability with a goal last weekend. Can he improve upon his tally on three for the season here?
Fulham are desperate to win while Wolves won’t want to be beaten
The onus is on The Cottagers to be positive
Hard to pick a winner
Both of these sides have really struggled of late, not to mention when it comes to scoring goals.
Fulham know that the pressure is on them to perform here, especially with a desperately tough fixture list around the corner.
Wolves realise they can make themselves hard to beat, and will want to avoid losing here and risk being dragged down in the survival race.
