High-flying Fulham aiming to continue fantastic run against battling Wolves
Fulham to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Fulham, London, Craven Cottage
Bet NowIt is worth reminding ourselves that Fulham were one of the favourites for relegation this season, seeing as they were promoted at the end of the last campaign.
Marco Silva’s side have been excellent, however. While Aleksandar Mitrovic has been their star man, knocking in bags of goals and bringing his teammates into the game with excellent hold-up play, others have been brilliant too.
They now have their sights set on European football next season, but know that they will need to hold off the teams below them to do so.
Wolves continue to show improvement under Julen Lopetegui, although the Spanish manager will want more consistency from his players.
They continue with their scoring issues but now look like a team that will avoid relegation this season – a massive blow to other teams fighting that battle.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Only Manchester United have won more games than Fulham since the World Cup
Brilliant wins over Forest and Brighton have come without conceding
Reasons to be fearful:
Winless in their last five meetings with Wolves
Mitrovic may miss out once again with injury here
Fulham’s quest this season is not survival, as many of us would have thought at the start of the season, but finishing in a European place for next season.
As unbelievable as it sounds, the Cottagers now sit ahead of Brighton, Liverpool, Brentford and Chelsea in the league, although they face a huge fight on their hands to fend those teams off in the coming months.
While Mitrovic has been their main scorer this season, they may have to do without him again here. They have shown recently that they can cope without the big Serbian, however.
Their main concern will be beating a revived Wolves team, something they haven’t been able to do in their last five meetings.
This would be a good time to change that.
Star Man – Manor Solomon
Solomon has scored after coming off the bench in each of Fulham’s last two games, perhaps suggesting he should be in the starting line-up here.
Reasons to be cheerful
Won their last away trip to Fulham, 1-0 in 2021
They have won two of their four away games under Lopetegui
Reasons to be fearful
Have scored less than half the number of goals Fulham have this season
Home defeat to Bournemouth last weekend showed improvement still needed
Wolves have shown the benefit of bringing in a top-class, experienced manager to improve the team and make the fans believe once again.
It now would appear that Wolves are destined to remain in the Premier League next season, although there is still a long way to go in this campaign and performance levels can’t afford to drop.
While Wolves’ strikers still struggle to find the net, the rest of the team has contributed enough to secure the points in recent weeks. Pedro Neto may be fit enough to return to the squad here too.
Although the Wanderers have a good record against Fulham in recent seasons, this will be a stern away test for Lopetegui’s men.
Star Man – Daniel Podence
The diminutive Podence has popped up with some crucial goals for Wolves this season and is one of their most efficient attackers going forward.
Fulham are favourites with or without Mitrovic
Willian will cause trouble down the wings
Wolves can always cause a surprise or two
Fulham’s run of form has been nothing short of fantastic since the Premier League resumed after the World Cup. Only Manchester United have claimed more victories in that timeframe.
However, Marco Silva is realistic to know that this won’t last forever, and his team face Arsenal and Liverpool within the next month.
Wolves just don’t score enough goals and Lopetegui must work out the best way to get them through the rest of this campaign safely so that he can rebuild properly in the summer.
All results are possible here, but you feel Fulham can sneak it at home.
