Germany finally up and running after thrashing Portugal, now take on Hungary to secure qualification
Germany to win 2-0
Tournament: UEFA Euro 2020 | Venue: Munich, Allianz Arena
Bet NowGermany announced themselves at the Euros by winning in style against Portuguese side who were blown away by the quality that the three-times winners possess.
They were narrowly beaten by France in the opening game of the tournament, and in truth looked a little lost for ideas going forward. That was far from the case in their second game and, although they conceded the first goal, they bounced back with some terrific football.
The unfortunate news is that key playmaker Thomas Muller will miss out here after suffering a knee injury.
Hungary have played well in their two matches so far, frustrating Portugal until only six minutes from the end, and then going on to earn a hard-fought draw with France.
They must win this match to stand a chance of qualifying, which is a tall order for sure. It means that they will have to attack more than they have so far, potentially leaving gaps for the Germans to exploit.
World Ranking: 12
Best Historical Finish at the Euros: Winners, 1972/1980/1996
Predicted Finish This Year: Quarter Finals
Reasons to be cheerful:
Big win against Portugal will provide huge confidence boost
Only lost one of their last six meetings with Hungary
Reasons to be fearful:
Injured Muller will be missed
Any slip ups could leave them facing elimination
There aren’t many teams in the world who could cope with Germany when they play to their full potential, as they did against Portugal the other day.
Their opponents scoring first seemed to spark Germany into life, who scored the next four goals without reply and give them a great chance of qualifying for the Round of 16.
If both Germany and France win their games, Germany will finish second and will likely face England in the Round of 16. Should France fail to beat Portugal, the Germans could go above them and face a potentially easier game against a team who finished third in their group.
Nevertheless, Hungary could be dangerous themselves as they must win to stand any chance of qualifying.
Star Man – Robin Gosens
Scored a goal, provided an assist and was an absolute menace on the left against Portugal.
World Ranking: 37
Best Historical Finish at the Euros: Semi Finals, 1964
Predicted Finish This Year: Group Stage
Reasons to be cheerful:
Managed to frustrate both Portugal and France
Know that they must win the game
Reasons to be fearful:
Lose their home advantage by playing in Munich
Poor record against Germany
For all their efforts, not to mention the fact that they’ve hosted the only games with 100% crowd capacity at the tournament, Hungary appear to be going out of the Euros in the group stage.
It’s no less than was expected, having been drawn in the toughest group imaginable. The point they earned against France could be vital, of course, if they manage to upset the odds here and beat Germany.
They haven’t managed to beat Germany since 2004, however, and that was the first time since the 1980s, meaning that the odds are heavily stacked against them.
Hungary have proved that they can be tough to break down, but they now need to show that they can go and score goals against the German giants.
Star Man – Attila Fiola
Immediately made a national hero of himself by scoring against France. Can he inspire his team to victory here?
Germany will boss possession
If they score early, Hungary could crumble
Hungary must come out and be positive
While Hungary’s solid and well-drilled approach has kept them in the tournament until now, they must throw that out of the window here and go for the win.
Despite Germany’s big win against Portugal, there may still be weakness there that they can exploit.
However, if the Germans score first it could be game over. They have some quality players, and you feel they are just getting into gear at the right time.
Germany to win 2-0
