HUNGARY vs FRANCE Match Preview & Analysis

France edged past a rather toothless Germany side in their Group F opener in Munich, ensuring that they got their campaign off to a winning start.

In truth, although France were not at their thrilling best, they barely needed to get out of second or third gear on a night where they were rarely challenged by their German opponents.

As Portugal scored three times in their win over Hungary, France are currently second in the group, but a win here would see them almost certainly qualify for the Round of 16.

Hungary made their opponents work hard to beat them, and were perhaps a little unlucky to lose by the 3-0 scoreline which suggests a more one-sided affair. In reality, it took Portugal until the 84th minute to go ahead, with the Hungarians suffering a late collapse.

Once again playing in their home stadium, can a full crowd cheer them on to a better result here?

Teams Preview

Hungary Preview

World Ranking: 37

Best Historical Finish at the Euros: Semi Finals, 1964

Predicted Finish This Year: Group Stage

Reasons to be cheerful:

A full crowd should give them a boost

That defeat was only their first in 11 games

Reasons to be fearful:

Winless in their last four games at Euros

      Poor record against France

Hungary will have taken some positives away with them from their defeat to Portugal, not least that they kept out the reigning champions until six minutes from the end.

A rather unfortunate deflection caused the first goal, and after that Hungary looked a little deflated after all the hard work they had put in.

Losing to Cristiano Ronaldo and co. is nothing to be ashamed of, but they face more world class stars here when France arrive. If they lose once more, their Euros journey is likely to be over, with three-times winners Germany also to play in their final group game.

Unfortunately, their record against France isn’t great, losing both games against them at major tournaments.

Star Man – Adam Szalai

Looked sharp against Portugal and led the line well. Will France’s defence allow him more space?

France Preview

World Ranking: 5

Best Historical Finish at the Euros: Winners, 1984/2000

Predicted Finish This Year: Winners

Reasons to be cheerful:

Looked good against Germany without ever needing to go into full throttle

Won their last five meetings with Hungary

Reasons to be fearful:

Could be complacent if they make changes to the team

Any slip ups here could allow Germany to come back into the fold

There is no doubt that there is more to come from France after their 1-0 win over Germany. It was a marginal win, although they never had to really stretch themselves at any point.

There were flashes of brilliance from Kylian Mbappe, Pogba and Kante ruled the roost in midfield, while the defenders made short work of anything that came their way.

Against Hungary, they will likely see even more of the ball, and it will be how they use it which will determine the result. It took Portugal 84 minutes to break Hungary down, so France know they may have to be patient.

Star Man – Kylian Mbappe

Had a goal ruled out for offside against Germany, but his running and technical ability was a threat throughout.

HUNGARY vs FRANCE Winning Prediction

     France are overwhelming favourites

Hungary have to stay tight to Mbappe

Set pieces will be crucial for the home side

Hungary will ask for the same again from their players against France, hoping to hold out for as long as possible, and try to pinch a goal themselves. Set pieces could be the way to do so.

For France, they will likely be attacking against a team defending very deep, and will need to stay patient as they try to find a way through.

They are favourites to do so, but it may take a while.

France to win 2-0
