After seeing their qualification hopes ended by Japan in round two of the AFC Asian Cup, India travel to Sydney for their final group match against Chinese Taipei on Tuesday at 2:30 PM IST, playing only for pride. In contrast, Chinese Taipei still have plenty at stake after their win over Vietnam, with a potential quarterfinal spot within reach.

Current Standings: With a goal difference of -12, India sits at the bottom of Group C, trailing Chinese Taipei, who occupies second place with three points.

Head-to-head Record: The teams have met only once in the history of the Asian Cup, and on that occasion Chinese Taipei walked away as winners.

India Preview

After a resilient display against Vietnam in their opener, India hoped to put up a stronger fight against Japan, even if a win seemed unlikely. However, the contest slipped away quickly as Japan scored three times within the first 35 minutes, setting the tone for a one-sided game that eventually ended 11–0, with seven goals coming after the break.

India struggled to create any attacking threat, failing to register a shot or even enter the Japanese penalty area. For Amelia Valverde, the immediate task will be helping her side recover mentally and prepare for one final push in the group stage.

Goalkeeper Elangbam Chanu has been India’s busiest player so far, making nine saves in two matches. With the team still recovering from a tough outing, limiting the damage may be the immediate goal on Tuesday—and Chanu could once again play a crucial role.

India Probable Starting Lineup - Elangbam Chanu (GK); Sanju Yadav, Sweety Devi, Shilky Devi, Juli Kishan, Manisha Kalyan, Sangita Basfore, Martina Thokchom, Rimpa Haldar, Pyari Xaxa, Sanfida Nongrum

Chinese Taipei Preview

In contrast, Chinese Taipei enjoyed a positive outing in round two, edging Vietnam 1–0 to boost their hopes of reaching the AFC Asian Cup quarterfinals for the second straight edition after their 2022 run. Having also lost narrowly 2–0 to Japan, their chances remain strong.

The winning goal came in the 26th minute, when Su Yu-Husan headed home from close range. It was a solid performance overall, reflected in an xG of 1.51 and xGA of 0.86. However, the victory came at a cost, with both Su Yu-Husan and Chang Chi-Ian were  forced off due to injuries.

Chinese Taipei will sense an opportunity on Tuesday, especially after India’s defensive struggles against Japan. To capitalize, they will look to Su Yu-Husan—if she is fit to play—or Hsu Yi-yun to create and finish the chances that could secure a crucial result.

Chinese Taipei Probable Starting Lineup - Wang Yu-ting (GK); Pan Shin-yu, Su Sin-yun, Chen Ying-hui, Pan Yen-hsin, Hsu Yi-yun, Saki Matsunaga, Wu Kai-ching, Chen Yu-chin, Li Yi-wen, Chen Jin-wen.

The two sides have met three times, with Chinese Taipei winning twice and India once. India’s lone victory came in a 1–0 international friendly in 2021, while their most recent meeting in 2023 ended in a 2–1 win for Taipei. The contests have generally been close, but India may still be recovering mentally from their heavy defeat to Japan. With that in mind, Chinese Taipei appear the favourites for this encounter.
