Iran, one of Asia’s most decorated sides, face New Zealand in what is effectively a must-win game for both teams in their own way. The All Whites carry the underdog label, but they do have a world-class striker and a few capable of springing a surprise. Iran, meanwhile, are expected to take control and will see this as a key chance to make a statement in their push to reach the knockout stage for the first time.

The match will be played at Los Angeles Stadium, which also hosted the USA’s opener and will stage eight matches in total, including three knockout fixtures.

Iran arrive at the 2026 World Cup as one of the oldest squads in the tournament, boasting an average age of 30. 

Experience is very much the calling card for Amir Ghalenoei's side, with 12 members of the 2022 squad returning in the hope of finally guiding Team Melli beyond the group stage. Off the pitch, they will also have to contend with the added scrutiny and potentially hostile atmosphere awaiting them in the United States.

Qualification was largely comfortable, with Iran topping their groups across the AFC qualifying stages and finishing two points clear of Uzbekistan. Their standout feature was an attack that produced 35 goals in 16 matches, making this one of the most potent Iranian sides in recent memory. 

Defensively, however, there are concerns, particularly at centre-back, after conceding more goals than expected despite facing relatively modest opposition.

The squad announcement brought a few surprises. Veteran striker Sardar Azmoun, Iran's third-highest scorer of all time and one of their leading contributors in qualifying, was left out, as was Belgium-based winger Allahyar Sayyadmanesh, who enjoyed an impressive club season. Those omissions have raised eyebrows, but Team Melli still possess enough quality and experience to fancy their chances of making history.

Key Players 

Mehdi Taremi is Iran’s key man in attack, and as the national team’s third-highest scorer, he carries a huge share of the responsibility in the final third. He top scored for them in the qualifiers with 17 goal contributions (10G+7A). 

Now at Olympiacos, the 33-year-old brings elite experience from Porto and Inter, while Mehdi Ghayedi adds pace and directness from the wing, giving Team Melli another important attacking outlet. 

Break out star

Before the tournament even begins, keep an eye on Amitmohammad Razzaghini. The 20-year-old midfielder, who announced himself with two goals at the 2023 U-17 World Cup, possesses the talent and fearlessness to emerge as one of Iran’s breakout stars on the biggest stage.

The loss of Ali Gholizadeh, arguably one of Iran's most in-form attackers, is the biggest setback suffered by Team Melli ahead of the World Cup. Apart from that blow, no fresh injury concerns or suspensions have been reported in the Iranian camp.

New Zealand are back on the World Cup stage for just the third time and their first appearance since 2010. There is a strong belief that this squad is stronger than the one that famously went unbeaten in South Africa, becoming the only team at the tournament not to lose a game, albeit without progressing beyond the group stage.

The All Whites booked their place by defeating New Caledonia 3-0 in the OFC final, taking advantage of Oceania's first-ever guaranteed World Cup berth. Under Darren Bazeley, New Zealand have developed into an attack-minded, possession-based side, though the step up in quality from Oceania means tactical adaptability will be key.

Indian fans, meanwhile, may have a special reason to tune in. Midfielder Sarpreet Singh, who is of Indian heritage and once spent time with Bayern Munich, remains one of the most recognisable names in the squad.

Chris Wood  is New Zealand’s biggest name and the one most neutrals will know best. Injuries limited him to just over 20 appearances for Nottingham Forest last season, where he managed five goals, but his superb 2024-25 campaign, when he scored 20 Premier League goals, showed his true quality. He is also on the brink of history, set to become the first All Whites player to feature at two World Cups.

New Zealand’s only injury concern is Ryan Thomas, who arrives at the tournament short of match practice after missing the recent friendlies.

Though New Zealand are the lowest-ranked side in the group, they have enough attacking threat to trouble an Iran defence that is not always the most convincing. Their narrow loss to England just days ago should also give them some belief heading into this fixture. 

For Iran, much may depend on mentality as much as quality, with outside noise likely to play a big role in how they respond. Even so, the higher rank and greater overall experience make Iran the favourites to edge it.
