Javi Gracia’s tenure at Leeds United has started off in mixed fashion. Like Sean Dyche at Everton, Leeds won their first home game under Gracia getting them off to a strong start.

They then went to a struggling Chelsea and lost a tight game 1-0, dragging themselves back into the relegation battle where they look set to remain for the rest of the season.

Managerial changes sometimes work, in the case of Julen Lopetegui at Wolves, and sometimes don’t, as we’ve seen at Southampton with Nathan Jones. Leeds must hope that Gracia can help them avoid relegation.

Brighton’s own change of manager worked perfectly for them in the first few months of the season. Roberto De Zerbi has been able to pick up Graham Potter’s work and take it to another level.

The Seagulls have games in hand over every team above them in the league, and could be just a point behind Liverpool in 5th if they win those.

They won’t find Elland Road an easy place to go this weekend, however.

Leeds United Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Looking to win consecutive home games for only the second time this season

Pushed Chelsea hard last week despite defeat

Reasons to be fearful:

     Poor record against Brighton

Just one win since early November

Leeds are one of up to nine clubs that could potentially find themselves in a relegation battle this season. Just six points separate Bournemouth at the bottom and Crystal Palace in 12th.

Unfortunately for Leeds, they are currently level on points with Everton and only above the relegation zone on goal difference.

The Whites won their last game, however – their first under new manager Javi Gracia. A win here would be just their second back-to-back victory this season.

With all teams desperate for points, Leeds can’t afford to lose their home games. Their next games at Elland Road are against Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace and you feel they need to win at least one.

Goal scoring is Leeds’ key problem right now – they’ve netted just two goals from their last five matches in all competitions.

Star Man – Wilfried Gnonto

Gnonto only came on as a substitute against Chelsea, meaning he should be fit and raring to go here.

Brighton & Hove Albion Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Away form has been better than at home this season

Have outscored all but three teams in the league

Reasons to be fearful

     Leeds are desperate for points

Scheduling concerns could catch up with them

Due to their continued progress in the FA Cup, Brighton went two weeks without a Premier League game, but made up for lost time with a thumping 4-0 win over West Ham last weekend.

They have three games in hand over Fulham, one over Newcastle and two over Liverpool – the three teams above them currently that Brighton could potentially catch should they win.

Their additional games remaining could cause something of a scheduling issue for Brighton as the months continue. Their squad isn’t the biggest and they could face a lot of games if their FA Cup run continues.

It’s a nice problem to have, of course – many teams would love to be chasing a European spot in the league and a potential run to Wembley in the cup.

Brighton’s away form is better than at home this season – they’d be 5th if only games away from the Amex counted.

They’ll face a tough atmosphere at Elland Road, however.

Star Man – Kaoru Mitoma

Mitoma has been a breath of fresh air this season, particularly in the last two months, and it shows just how good Brighton’s recruitment is. Mitoma has eight goals and three assists.

Leeds will look to start quickly

     Both teams will score

A win would do wonders for either side

Like all teams near the bottom, Leeds simply can’t afford to lose their home games between now and the end of the season.

When coming up against a team as direct and organised as Brighton, Leeds must use the passion of their home supports to, ideally, claim victory.

Brighton, however, know exactly how to handle these sorts of situations, as we’ve seen already this season. They have been great away from home and could continue that run here.
