Huge clash sees 16th host 17th with Leeds and Leicester battling it out for survival
Leicester to win 1-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Leeds, Elland Road
Although Leeds have only spent three weeks inside the bottom three this season, there is a growing feeling that the Whites are in serious trouble right now, with the club unable to pick up enough points.
Javi Gracia initially achieved some success when he walked through the door as the new manager, although that bounce seems to have deserted him, and they’ve now lost four of their last five.
Elland Road always believes in its players, although fans will be seriously worried whether they have enough quality and belief to ride this one out.
Leicester have risen outside of the bottom three after spending almost a month inside the danger zone. Dean Smith won his first home game in charge to provide Foxes fans with some hope.
Another win here would well and truly light the flames of optimism.
Reasons to be cheerful:
A win would take them four points clear of danger
Have scored in seven consecutive matches
Reasons to be fearful:
Won just one of their last nine meetings with Leicester
Conceded 23 goals in their last nine matches under Gracia
Unfortunately for their chances of staying up this season, Leeds have started to concede goals at an alarming rate under Javi Gracia.
In the nine matches since his appointment, his players have conceded 23 goals – the most in the division during that period – with some heavy defeats to Crystal Palace and Liverpool in there.
Both of those losses were at home, showcasing that Elland Road is perhaps not the fortress that it once was. The belief has slipped out of Leeds’ home ground in recent months.
Furthermore, their record against Leicester isn’t great, having won just a single game of their last nine meetings.
Can they turn things around here?
Star Man – Rodrigo
The Spaniard remains Leeds’ topscorer this season, despite spending a large chunk of it on the treatment table. This will be his 100th Premier League appearance, if he plays, and he could do with a celebratory goal.
Reasons to be cheerful
Beat Leeds earlier this season, as well as in this fixture last year
Harvey Barnes has a great record against the Whites
Reasons to be fearful
Have lost 20 games this season – a joint-club record
Won just three games in 2023
This will go down as a season to forget for Leicester fans, although it’ll be much easier to take if they can avoid relegation.
With Dean Smith now at the helm, they may just stand a chance of doing that. He is a proven man-manager who can improve players and motivate them to give their all.
With teams so tightly packed at the bottom of the table, it only took one victory to lift Leicester out of the bottom three. Another two or three in their remaining matches would give them some breathing space.
Unfortunately for the Foxes, star man James Maddison appears to have gone off the boil at the wrong time. He’s failed to score, and created just one assist, in his last eight league games.
Star Man – Harvey Barnes
Certain players just seem to enjoy playing against specific teams more than most. Barnes has netted in each of his last six appearances against Leeds.
Leicester should have a spring in their step
Elland Road will go flat if visitors are on top
Could be tight on chances in front of goal
With their first win under Dean Smith coming just a few days ago, this Leicester group of players should now have the belief that they can turn this mess around in the coming weeks.
Another two or three wins would see them pull comfortably away from the danger zone, although they have some tough fixtures to come.
Leeds appear to have run out of ideas lately, and are running out of time to turn their form around. Defeat here would be disastrous, but that’s what they might have to face.
