Leeds and Manchester United played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in midweek, showing everyone why this fixture used to entertain so much back in the day.

The Yorkshire club have been relegated and now promoted since their peak in the 1990s and early 2000s, but this week’s game showed that their rivalry with Manchester United remains strong.

Leeds remain without a manager, something which didn’t stop them performing at a high level a few days ago. This time around, they will have their home crowd behind them and we know how daunting Elland Road can be.

For Manchester United, they will be pleased that they came back from 2-0 down to claim a point, but at home they will see it as an opportunity missed to go level on points with Manchester City in 2nd.

Their injuries and suspensions are perhaps taking its toll on their season, having dropped points in three of their last four league games.

Can they bounce back here?

Leeds United Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

A win would equal their tally of four home victories from last season

Played brilliantly in their 2-2 draw in midweek

Reasons to be fearful:

Could equal their club record of nine straight games without victory

Won just one of their last 18 against Red Devils

It wasn’t so much the point they earned from the game that was most pleasing to Leeds fans, although it certainly helped their league standing.

It was more their performance against Manchester United, especially without a manager, that impressed most of all. Their opponents had won 13 games on the bounce and to stop that run shows their quality.

Here, at Elland Road, they will hope for a similar performance that puts their opponents on the back foot and creates problems from first minute to last.

They have beaten Manchester United just once from their last 18 meetings, while they have won just two of their last 18 this season.

However, there will be optimism surrounding the club, especially if a new manager is announced beforehand, and the energy of the team should reflect that.

Star Man – Wilfried Gnonto

The wide man was electric in midweek, driving through the heart of United’s defence to open the scoring. Gnonto has scored four goals in his last seven appearances.

Manchester United FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Excellent record against Leeds, despite midweek draw

Marcus Rashford’s form has been electric since the World Cup

Reasons to be fearful

Just one win from their last four league games

No clean sheets from their last five matches

It shows where this Manchester United team are right now that they can’t quite make that step up to Manchester City and Arsenal’s level just yet.

When presented with the opportunity to go level on points with City, and being on a 13-game winning run at home, they are pegged back by an energetic Leeds team.

United will also be disappointed with the fact that they drew level with Leeds on the 70th minute, giving them over 20 minutes of the game to find a winner, which they could not manage.

Erik ten Hag will want to make sure that his team bounces back here, having won just one of their last four in the league.

After all, Newcastle are breathing down their necks and Tottenham aren’t too far behind either.

Star Man – Marcus Rashford

Rashford scored yet again in the draw against Leeds – his 12th in 14 appearances since the World Cup. No one in Europe’s top five leagues has as many goals as Rashford in that timeframe.

     Expect both teams to score

Red Devils must be more ruthless in front of goal

Can Leeds bring another energetic performance?

The second meeting of these clubs within a few days is expected to bring as much entertainment as the first.

Leeds will have the backing of the mighty Elland Road behind them here, and Manchester United will need to be much tighter at the back, and more ruthless upfront, to claim the victory they need.

The home team are likely to remain without a manager, while Erik ten Hag will have spent the last few days pondering how to overcome Leeds’ energy and directness.

He has the players to do it, but they must step up from midweek.
