Although there are perhaps more elegant games on offer this weekend, such as Tottenham against Chelsea, or the Carabao Cup final between Manchester United and Newcastle, none are more important than this one.

Leeds and Southampton are battling it out at the bottom with both teams facing the serious prospect of relegation this season.

Both clubs have recently sacked their managers, although Leeds have at least taken steps to appointing a new boss with Javi Gracia set to join the team this week. He may not be in the dugout for this one, however.

Southampton claimed an unlikely win over Chelsea in their last game, proving just how bad the Blues are right now and also how much the Saints needed a change of leadership.

Ruben Selles has taken temporary charge of Southampton and will continue to do so again here. It’s clear that the players required a different approach than the one they faced under Nathan Jones.

A draw is little use to either team here.

Leeds United Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Lost just one of their last 14 home league games against Southampton

Leeds’ squad is good enough to remain in the top division

Reasons to be fearful:

Winless in their last 10 league games

Lost four of their last six

A work permit issue means that Javi Gracia may not be able to take charge of Leeds before this game, which would be a blow to their chances here.

We know exactly how a new manager bounce can help a club – just look at Everton and Wolves right now – so Leeds need to collect points quickly.

On the positive side of things, Leeds have a decent squad and one that is good enough to remain within the Premier League if Gracia can get them playing to their potential.

They have a great record against Southampton too, winning seven and losing just one of their last 14 meetings at Elland Road.

A win here could take them as high as 16th depending on other teams’ results.

Star Man – Wilfried Gnonto

Gnonto is just the sort of technically gifted, pacey, energetic player you need when the rest of the team is struggling. He impressed in two games against Manchester United and always looks like he has a goal in him.

Southampton FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Four of Southampton’s five wins this season have been away from home

Two wins from their last five represents some progress

Reasons to be fearful

     Poor record against Leeds

Will find it tough to collect enough points to survive

While Southampton are just a point behind Leeds, it’s clear to see that the Saints don’t have quite the same level of quality in their squad as their opponents.

Southampton have been short of goalscorers for some time now, made worse by the departure of Danny Ings in 2021. Che Adams and Adam Armstrong have unsuccessfully shouldered the burden since.

Now onto their third manager of the season, can they find a togetherness and spirit that has been lacking so far this campaign?

They have been much better on the road this season, collecting four of their five wins away from St. Mary’s and 68% of their points in total.

Can that recent win over Chelsea inspire them to turn things around?

Star Man – James Ward-Prowse

Ward-Prowse has been single-handedly dragging Southampton along this season. He scored yet another brilliant free kick to give his side three precious points against Chelsea last weekend.

Elland Road will be rocking for this one

Could see a game of high energy but low quality

     First goal could win it

You can bet that the atmosphere at Elland Road this weekend will be red-hot, with so much at stake between these two teams.

There is still long enough left this season to secure safety but that run of form needs to start right about now.

Leeds have a sprinkling of talent throughout their squad which gives them the upper hand against the Saints. The home side played well over two games against Manchester United recently and that should be their blueprint here.

Southampton seem to have a new focus now that Nathan Jones has departed, although they’ll struggle to cope with the pressure here.
