Inconsistent Leicester take on superb Fulham desperate to pick up points
Leicester to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Leicester, King Power Stadium
Bet NowIf you take a quick glance at the current Premier League table, you’d think that it had been flipped on its head. Leicester are closer to the bottom than the top, while Fulham are exceeding everyone’s expectations.
Brendan Rodgers’ side were probably unlucky to come away from their game against Liverpool with nothing. The Reds relied on two own goals from Leicester’s defence and created very little otherwise.
Unfortunately, that has been the story of Leicester’s season so far, and there is no substitute for points on the board. They must improve their league position quickly to make something of this campaign.
On the other hand, Fulham have been mightily impressive right from the start. Marco Silva’s side were a little lucky to beat Southampton in their last game, but they have earned it after playing well this season.
Their league position of 7th is well-deserved, and you only need to look at the teams they have beaten to tell you just how impressive they have been.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Have won two of their last three meetings with Fulham
Unlucky not to claim anything against Liverpool
Reasons to be fearful:
Have lost their last two home league games
As many as seven first-team players are out injured
When fighting desperately for points, as Leicester are right now, you could do with having a full squad available to choose from.
Unfortunately, for Brendan Rodgers, he has as many as nine first-team stars unavailable to him right now. Patson Daka became the latest casualty in the match against Liverpool.
He joins the likes of James Maddison, Jonny Evans, James Justin, Ricardo Pereira, Dennis Praet and Ryan Bertrand on the treatment table.
Their tactics worked well against Liverpool in their last game, playing directly through the heart of the Reds’ midfield worked a treat, but they may not be able to do the same here.
Fulham are, as strange as it sounds, arguably more organised than Liverpool and harder to play through. They will need to use their pace on the wings to greater advantage.
Star Man – Harvey Barnes
His pace and direct running caused Liverpool no end of problems in their recent game. If he can stretch Fulham’s defence in wide positions, Leicester can have some joy in this game.
Reasons to be cheerful
Have more points at this stage – 25 – than any season since 2009
Seeking back-to-back away victories for the first time since 2011
Reasons to be fearful
Not the best record against Leicester
Tough fixture list in January
Despite their league position, as well as they fantastic results this season so far, Fulham look like they could use some reinforcements in the January transfer window.
They looked a little leggy in their late win over Southampton recently and they have a gruelling fixture list coming up to start 2023.
In the league, Leicester are followed by Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham, with Chelsea to follow again at the start of February.
It’s a daunting fixture list and, although Fulham have claimed some impressive victories so far this campaign, things can quickly change in the Premier League.
That said, they have a brilliant team spirit under Marco Silva. They are aiming to win their third consecutive game for the second time this season, while they have already amassed 25 points.
They’ll face a desperate Leicester here, however.
Star Man – Aleksandar Mitrovic
The Serbian missed a penalty in Fulham’s recent win over Southampton, which fortunately didn’t cost his side three points. He’ll be eager to make up for that here and add to his already impressive goal tally.
A game with evenly shared possession
Could go close to the wire
Leicester need to go for it from the start
Leicester should have learned their lesson from their recent game against Liverpool. They attacked the Reds from the start and it paid off when they scored early on.
But for the two own goals, which didn’t help matters, they managed to keep Liverpool at bay for much of the game.
Fulham will be confident given their league position, but Leicester will have nothing to fear and will be spurred on by the crowd.
