Liverpool’s topsy turvy season has left them clinging onto the hope of securing Champions League football for next season, even though that looks like a slim hope right now.

Since beating Manchester United in a 7-0 hammering, the Reds have failed to win any of their next three, losing two in the process. It means they are a full 13 points behind the top four heading into this game.

Arsenal, as we know, are heading in the right direction under Mikel Arteta, and have a golden opportunity to win their first Premier League title for almost 20 years.

Manchester City are hot on their heels and the Gunners know that any mistake will be pounced upon. Just five points is the gap between the two sides, so they can’t afford any slip ups.

In previous seasons, going to Anfield needing a win would have been a tough ask, but it’s now the minimum requirement of this Arsenal team.

Each time Liverpool seem to have recovered some of their usual confidence and swagger, they take a couple of steps backwards and drift away from the teams that are chasing the important positions near the top.

Two defeats and a draw have followed that 7-0 win over Manchester United, meaning that Aston Villa, Brighton and the rest of the top seven have slipped ahead of them.

It’s a damning reflection on where the club is right now, that they could go five games without victory in all competitions.

Their record against Arsenal at Anfield has been excellent in recent seasons – winning all of their last six – although those games were won in seasons where these two teams were in different places.

Arsenal have got one heck of a tough April, a month that will test their title credentials and tell us if they are ready to win the league this season.

A cracking game against Liverpool is followed later this month by a trip to Manchester City, with a game against London rivals Chelsea finishing off April.

That game against Manchester City will be as mouth-watering as it will be important.

That said, they have the best away form in the league this season, claiming 14 victories and nine of their 12 clean sheets away from the Emirates. Another big performance is needed here.

Bukayo Saka has recovered from illness, although William Saliba and Eddie Nketiah are doubts.

Star Man – Gabriel Jesus

Jesus has been sensational since returning from long-term injury, scoring twice in their 4-1 win over Leeds last weekend. His presence will be a huge boost in the closing weeks of the season.
