If someone had told you that Liverpool will still be searching for their first win of the season in their fourth game, you wouldn’t have taken them seriously.
As it happens, they are, currently sitting way off the pace in 16th place after two draws and a defeat.
They were off the pace against Manchester United, who recovered from a terrible start to the season themselves.
The Reds must now put those troubles behind them, otherwise they’ll find themselves too far behind the leading teams to catch up.
Bournemouth started the season with promise, claiming victory against Aston Villa before losing to Manchester City and Arsenal. It doesn’t get any easier for them here against Liverpool.
It’s tough on Bournemouth to play three big teams so early in the season.
Liverpool are big favourites here.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Will be extra determined to secure their first win here
Won their last six matches against Bournemouth
Reasons to be fearful:
Injuries and suspensions are taking their toll on performances
Defensive weaknesses are unlike Klopp’s team
Liverpool’s loss against Manchester United was surprising, although it was the manner of their defeat that shocked most of the footballing world.
They looked completely off the pace for the first third of the match and although they played better in the second half, they didn’t deserve anything from the game.
The Reds missed Darwin Nunez upfront, someone who could have challenged United’s centre-backs more frequently. They are also desperately short in midfield, considering injuries to Thiago, Curtis Jones, Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain.
What they need is their first win of the season to perk them up, especially in front of their own fans.
They are likely to get one here, despite their poor defensive form, as they have a great record over Bournemouth. They’ve lost once to them in 17 meetings, stretching back to 1927.
Star Man – Mo Salah
Liverpool’s talisman was their best player, despite being on the losing end at United. Salah scored yet again, and will be key against Bournemouth.
Reasons to be cheerful
Two defeats have come against City and Arsenal
Could be playing Liverpool at the best possible time
Reasons to be fearful
Have conceded seven goals across three games
Players could be tired after playing midweek
Bournemouth have had the toughest run of fixtures to open the new season, having faced Arsenal, Manchester City and now Liverpool before the end of August.
Naturally, they will likely end that run of fixtures having taken no points. They do, however, have one win under their belts, having claimed three points on the opening day of the season against Villa.
The Cherries will hope that they can claim more results like that when this nightmare run of fixtures is over. They then have Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle before the end of September.
While those fixtures are not easy, they will fancy their chances of picking up some points.
In this fixture, they must take the example shown by Liverpool’s previous opponents and press them high. They are unlikely to catch Liverpool so weakened again.
Star Man – Kieffer Moore
Manchester United’s forwards showed others how to approach this game, by running in behind Liverpool’s defence and pressing quickly. Moore will need to do both here if Bournemouth are to be successful.
Liverpool to have over 70% possession
If Liverpool score early, it could be a thrashing
Bournemouth must press Liverpool all over the pitch
Liverpool need a strong performance and a positive result to get their season back on track.
In front of their home fans, they will expect nothing less than a win from this one. If they fail against Bournemouth, the alarm bells will be well and truly ringing.
For Bournemouth, they will be hoping to keep Liverpool at bay as high up the pitch as they can and then use their pace on the counterattack, although that is easier said than done.
It’s hard to look past a comfortable Liverpool win here.
