Liverpool and Chelsea have so much in common right now, not only that they are two of the biggest clubs in the country.

They are also two of the most inconsistent right now in terms of their form, with both suffering from a lack of consistency and a significant injury list of key players not helping their cause.

The Reds haven’t had too many setbacks during life under Jurgen Klopp, although this season could go down as one to forget if things continue in this way. They at least won their FA Cup game against Wolves this week.

Chelsea have continued to labour under Graham Potter since the Englishman took over as manager. The club have carried on splashing the cash, with another £80m+ spent on Mykhailo Mudryk.

Eventually, results need to come for both teams to feel that they can get into the top four. As it stands, it looks unlikely for either club.

What a game this could be.

Liverpool FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

One defeat in their last seven against Chelsea

Only City have scored more home goals than Liverpool’s 23

Reasons to be fearful:

Suffered consecutive defeats to start the year for the first time ever

Just one clean sheet from their last seven games in all competitions

Liverpool showed signs of sticking together as a team in their narrow 1-0 victory over Wolves in the FA Cup this week. They’ve now set up another tricky trip to Brighton as a result.

In the league, Jurgen Klopp’s men have lost their first two games in a calendar year for the first time, demonstrating just how difficult they’re finding life this season.

Now with a 10-point gap to make up on the top four, Liverpool must start to pull a winning run together. There’s never a better time to do it than against one of your historic rivals in Chelsea.

The Reds have a good history against the Blues, winning four of their last seven meetings and losing just the once.

Klopp’s men also have a good goalscoring record at home this season. Only Manchester City have scored more in front of their own fans.

Star Man – Mo Salah

Hasn’t quite been at his electric best this season, but is still comfortably Liverpool’s best player top scorer with 17. He has seven goals and two assists from his 19 appearances against Chelsea.

Chelsea FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

New £88m signing Mudryk will give them a boost

1-0 victory over Crystal Palace will help confidence

Reasons to be fearful

Clinging onto top-half spot with one win in four

Winless away from home in their last five

If Liverpool are struggling this season, then Chelsea are another step below that.

Graham Potter’s appointment hasn’t had the desired effect yet, either in terms of playing style of results to propel them up the table.

Chelsea’s owners still continue to splash the cash, with the £88m spent on new signing Mykhailo Mudryk taking Todd Boehly’s investment on players to almost £500m inside one season – utterly ludicrous numbers.

The Blues also have an injury crisis on their hands, with more players out than available right now. Kai Havertz, scorer of Chelsea’s winner against Palace, missed training for unexplained reasons this week.

Aubameyang will come in upfront if Havertz misses out, with Joao Felix serving the second game of his three-match suspension.

Star Man – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Is likely to slot in if Kai Havertz is unavailable. The Gabon striker has been out-of-favour recently and has just two goals from his 12 appearances against Liverpool.

Liverpool’s fans will push them forward

Expect two or more goals in the game

Mudryk could come off the bench

Liverpool against Chelsea is a fixture that often conjures up a goal or two, some of them controversial over the years.

You cannot underestimate the power of the Anfield crown cheering Liverpool on. Chelsea are in a fragile state right now and conceding an early goal could see them shrink in this atmosphere.

Even with a number of injuries across the pitch, Liverpool are favourites to pick up three points.
