Although very early in the season, Liverpool are in need of a win to kickstart their campaign.

They are only two points behind the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham, but such is the level of competition, they can’t afford to drop points in these types of games.

In truth, they were off the pace against newly promoted Fulham. Aleksandar Mitrovic ran their defence ragged at times, making the usually dominant Virgin van Dijk look ordinary.

Crystal Palace were expected to cause Arsenal some problems in their season opener against Arsenal. Instead, Arsenal used their energy and quality to score twice past them, while their defence was able to keep out Palace’s attack.

Both sides could do with victory here, but Liverpool are heavy favourites at home.

Liverpool FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

     Home support will inspire them

Attack remains as dominant as ever

Reasons to be fearful:

Defensive weaknesses may have been exposed

     Several injuries to contend with

Liverpool were expected to blow newly promoted Fulham away last weekend.

On the previous two attempts in the Premier League, Fulham were relegated straight away, and the same was expected this time around.

Instead, Fulham took the game to a Liverpool side who looked like they were expecting an easier game. Twice Liverpool went behind and, although they were able to come back both times to earn a draw, much more will be expected here.

They are experiencing a small injury crisis, however, especially in midfield. Thiago limped off against Fulham and will be out for a few weeks.

He joins fellow midfielders Curtis Jones and Naby Keita, as well as Diogo Jota and Ibrahima Konate on the sidelines.

Nevertheless, with the attacking power Liverpool possess, nothing less than three points is expected here.

Star Man – Mo Salah

Although Darwin Nunez is capturing people’s attention right now, Salah is still the main man at Liverpool.

Crystal Palace Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

     Pack a punch going forward

Can replicate Fulham’s high pressing from last week

Reasons to be fearful

Lost last 10 games against Liverpool

     Injury list is building up

On paper, this is a particularly daunting fixture for Crystal Palace fans.

They have lost each of their last 10 league games against Liverpool, going back to April 2017. Considering Liverpool will be desperate for three points, that run is likely to continue here as well.

There are some encouraging signs for Palace, though, however small they might be.

They play a similar game to Fulham, who earned a draw against Liverpool last week. With a fast attack and a high-pressing formation, they could cause Liverpool some problems.

Palace must first overcome their own injury list, with the likes of Butland, McArthur, Tomkins and Olise sitting out in recent weeks.

Star Man – Wilf Zaha

Palace no longer need to depend on Zaha quite as much these days, but he’s still their best player and capable of hurting Liverpool if given the opportunity.

     Liverpool will dominate possession

Palace will look to threaten on the counter

     More than two goals scored

If Liverpool are at the top of their game, this is one they’ll win comfortably.

If there is any doubt in their play, then Palace can have some joy on the counter, but those chances will be few and far between.

Expect Liverpool striker Nunez to start, and expect goals.
