Liverpool face a ‘do or die’ situation here with their Premier League season in the balance in a crunch class against phenomenal leaders Manchester City.

The Reds have endured a poor start to 2021, with three defeats, including two at Anfield, coming from their six league matches. They also crashed out of the FA Cup to old rivals Manchester United a few weeks ago.

Defensive reinforcements have arrived in the transfer window, but they face a race to be good enough to fill in for Liverpool’s first choice defenders in their absence.

Manchester City are enjoying one of the best runs of form we’ve seen in recent times – should they win against Liverpool, they’ll equal the record set by Preston and Arsenal in the 1980s of 14 wins on the spin.

However, they’ve not beaten Liverpool at Anfield in 18 years and, despite Liverpool’s mixed performances lately, will need a top display here.

Form Guide (all comps): LLWWL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Great record against City at Anfield

Are likely to improve their performance levels against a direct opponent

Reasons to be fearful:

In danger of losing three consecutive home games for first time since 1963

Could also go without scoring in four consecutive home games

Jurgen Klopp knows that defeat here will most likely mean conceding the Premier League this season, as 10 points behind will surely be too big a gap to claw back.

Their defeat to Brighton in midweek was surprising, but not shocking with them also losing to Burnley and Southampton in recent weeks. The Reds have lost four times this season, as many as their last two seasons combined.

There are positives, of course. They are not champions for nothing. They will undoubtedly improve their performance levels here, and should welcome back Alisson after illness and potentially Mane and Fabinho following injury.

With City in such good form, it will take a mammoth effort to claim three points here, but will need to do so to get themselves back in the title race.

Star Man – Mo Salah

Is in sparkling form right now, with 21 goals in total for the season so far.

Reasons to be cheerful:

Looking to equal an English club winning record

Could kept their 7th clean sheet in a row

Reasons to be fearful:

Poor record at Anfield – no win since 2003

De Bruyne and Aguero still not up to speed after injury

Manchester City could well run away with the league for the remainder of the season unless their sensational run of form is brought crashing to a halt here.

A victory here would not only be a huge shot of confidence in the arms of the City players, but a 10-point lead over last season’s champions with a game in hand.

Despite this, a win is not completely assured, with City often finding it difficult at Anfield, as so many teams have over the years. It is arguably their best opportunity to win at Liverpool’s home in recent years, with the Reds experiencing such mixed form.

With such a variety of in-form players to choose from, everyone will be eager to get a place in the starting XI and prove their worth to the team.

Star Man – Raheem Sterling

Has never scored against his old side, but is on 99 goals under Pep Guardiola for City.

Will be a tight game, with City as slight favourites

If Mane and Fabinho are fit it’ll be a huge boost to Liverpool

     Could end as a draw

Several big games this season have ended as a draw, and there is reason to believe that this could follow the same route.

Neither side will be desperate to throw caution to the wind and go all out attack – Liverpool because they cannot afford to lose the game, and City because they don’t need to with a seven point cushion.

If Liverpool can get one or two more players fit in time, this could help to swing it their way, but otherwise a draw is a likely option.
