Giant clash sees Liverpool host historic rivals Manchester United
Liverpool 2-2 Manchester United
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Anfield, Liverpool, Anfield
Bet NowThere have been some signs of a revival for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in recent weeks, having started 2023 in poor fashion.
Other than their dismal defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League, Liverpool have looked more like their old selves in the Premier League and now have a real shot of making the top four.
With several players now back from injury and hitting some sort of form, this could be an more even contest than it might have been a month or so ago.
Manchester United have collected more points than any other Premier League team since the World Cup restart. Not only that, they now have the Carabao Cup in their hands after victory over Newcastle last week.
Along with the FA Cup, where they are now through to the Quarter Finals, and the Europa League, United are still present in all competitions. Their confidence is sky-high right now.
United don’t always have the best time at Anfield but they enter this contest in their best run of form for years.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Unbeaten in six home games against United
Could go five consecutive league games unbeaten for first time this season
Reasons to be fearful:
Have looked easy to play against far too often this season
Lost to United earlier this season
Liverpool will fancy their chances of finishing in the top four now. After a good spell of form, and with Newcastle stumbling in their own quest for Champions League football, the Reds have a good shot.
Their main rivals will likely be Tottenham, with Antonio Conte’s side also finding their feet at just the right time. Liverpool have a game in hand over Spurs, which will put them three points behind if they win.
Klopp’s men will be confident coming into this game too. Against United, they enjoy a superior record in recent seasons, despite recent form of both clubs.
They will need to raise their game to beat their historic rivals. Liverpool have been too easy to cut through at times this season, which United have been thriving at under Erik ten Hag.
The Reds have no new injury concerns here, although Roberto Firmino confirmed this week that this will be his last season at the club.
Star Man – Mo Salah
Isn’t having his best of seasons, but still has 20 goals to his name. He has eight goals against Manchester United in previous meetings and will be keen to help his team beat them again here.
Reasons to be cheerful
Lost just one of their last 11 in the league
Scored in each of their last 15 – their best spell since a run of 20 in 2020
Reasons to be fearful
Won just four of 17 games in all competitions against Klopp’s Liverpool
Scored just one goal from their last seven visits to Anfield
What a 10-day period is has been for Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United.
They beat Barcelona in their Europa League tie to progress to the Round of 16. They then went to Wembley to beat Newcastle and claim the Carabao Cup – their first trophy for six seasons.
In midweek, they progressed to the FA Cup Quarter Final after seeing off West Ham. It’s safe to say that they enter this titanic clash full of confidence and in excellent form.
They must overcome their poor record against Liverpool, especially at Anfield, if they are to claim three points. They could go four consecutive games without scoring away to Klopp’s men.
In terms of personnel, there is a question mark over the fitness of Luke Shaw, who picked up a knock against Newcastle last weekend and missed the midweek fixture against West Ham.
Star Man – Marcus Rashford
Rashford’s goal in last weekend’s cup final took his tally to 25 for the season. He only played 30 minutes in midweek and should therefore be fit and raring to go here – he has six goals against Liverpool so far.
Anfield’s atmosphere will be electric
United are in better form but usually unsuccessful against Liverpool
Liverpool will feel confident of achieving home result
This has the makings of a titanic clash between two sides desperate to prove that they are on the right path.
Manchester United are fighting on all fronts and have an outside chance of affecting the title race if others drop points.
Liverpool will feel confident of obtaining a top four position, especially if they claim three points here. They need to raise their game, of course.
The feeling is that a draw wouldn’t be the worst result for either team, although all three results are very much possible.
