Big-hitters Liverpool take on stylish Newcastle side in intriguing tie
Liverpool to win 3-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Anfield, Liverpool, Anfield
Bet NowLiverpool shook off the cobwebs at the weekend, putting their apparent troubles behind them with a thumping 9-0 win, equalling the Premier League record in doing so.
Bournemouth looked totally shell-shocked, the newly promoted side collapsing in a heap as the game went on. They will struggle to stay up this season regardless and that won’t have done their mental state any favours.
The Reds now turn their attentions to Newcastle, who continue to impress fans and neutrals alike with their progressive style of football under Eddie Howe.
The Magpies have just the one victory so far this season, but remain unbeaten and two places above Liverpool in the team.
They claimed a terrific point against Manchester City and will aim to do similar against Liverpool here.
Can either side continue their form here?
Reasons to be cheerful:
Players will be in dreamland after scoring nine goals
Haven’t lost against Newcastle in last 11 meetings
Reasons to be fearful:
Newcastle showed Man City how dangerous they are
Will still be question marks over Liverpool’s defence after first three games
Many predicted that Liverpool would bounce back from their sluggish start to the season, which included two wins and a surprising defeat to historic rivals Manchester United.
Against Bournemouth, they released the handbrake and let Scott Parker’s men have it, full throttle. Scott Parker has since been removed from his job as Bournemouth manager, such was the demolition that day.
For the players to score nine against Bournemouth will have lifted their spirits immeasurably, although star man Mo Salah was not among them to the surprise of most.
They won’t have this game as easy. Newcastle have made sharp progress under Eddie Howe and have proven to other big teams exactly what they can do.
Liverpool have the upper hand in recent years though.
Star Man – Mo Salah
The Egyptian will have been thoroughly disappointed not to have scored in Liverpool’s 9-0 beating of Bournemouth. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he made up for it here.
Reasons to be cheerful
Unbeaten from four games is fine start to the season
Players will relish taking on another big team
Reasons to be fearful
Allan Saint-Maximin could miss out through injury
New signing Isak may not be able to take part
Newcastle have been an excellent watch so far this season. Against City, they went toe-to-toe with arguably the best club in Europe.
Six points from those games probably does not do them justice, in terms of the level of their performances. They’ll need another big one here to achieve a positive result away to Liverpool.
The Magpies may also have to do it with Saint-Maximin, who appeared to injure his hamstring late on at the weekend. Add this to Callum Wilson’s injury, and they look a little short up front. They missed Guimaraes through injury at the weekend too.
To add to this, new signing Alexander Isak may be forced to sit on the sidelines while he waits for a work permit to play in the Premier League.
Whoever is picked must work their socks off against a dangerous Liverpool team.
Star Man – Alexander Isak
Assuming he is able to play with a work permit issue, he’ll need to deliver in his first game for Newcastle to stand a chance of beating Liverpool. He has the pace and power to do so at 22 years old.
Liverpool will press forward while Newcastle will counter
If Liverpool score early, they could put a few past Magpies
Newcastle will pose their own problems going forward
Liverpool vs. Newcastle has a tasty feel about it and has delivered some classics down the years. Who could forget the 4-3 Liverpool victory in 1996?
Liverpool will have their tails up having smashed nine past Bournemouth a few days ago, but Newcastle will present a much tougher challenge.
The Magpies’ main issue will be that their main players may not be available.
Either way, Liverpool will be expected to win in front of their home fans.
Liverpool to win 3-1
