Liverpool host West Ham looking for consecutive wins to boost league form
Liverpool to win 2-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Anfield, Liverpool, Anfield
Bet NowWhen the signs pointed to a troubling season for Liverpool, a pulsating win over City was just what they needed in order to kickstart their season once more.
In an intense game, Liverpool scored the only goal of the match through a piece of brilliance from Mo Salah, although it took a team effort to keep City out for 90 minutes.
It was three points the Reds desperately needed and they showed the world that there may be some fight in them yet this season.
Next up at Anfield is West Ham, who arrive good form having also struggled at the start of the campaign.
The Hammers are up to 12th, just two points behind the Reds, and have won seven of their last eight in all competitions.
David Moyes men can be a tough cookie to crack when they are on form, so this should be another stern test for Liverpool.
Reasons to be cheerful:
City win will have boosted confidence massively
Have won 36 of their 49 home games against Hammers
Reasons to be fearful:
West Ham are in fine form
Liverpool have been inconsistent all season
After beating champions Manchester City, the key test for Liverpool will now be going on an extended winning run to catapult them up the table.
It is something that they have struggled with this season – being consistent from one game to the next. Only once this season have they followed up one league win with another, a fault that they must fix.
Although West Ham are a team in-form under David Moyes, Liverpool should feel that this is the perfect opportunity to claim six points from six and potentially lift them as high as 5th.
Their record against the Hammers is there for all to see, having only lost once against them at Anfield in 49 meetings.
Jurgen Klopp will have to miss out for this one, however, with the manager sent off during the win over City.
Star Man – Mo Salah
When the biggest occasion came calling, Mo Salah stepped up and delivered. The Egyptian looked at his electric best at the weekend and took his goal superbly. He was also named the 5th best player in the world this week.
Reasons to be cheerful
Lost just one of their last 13 midweek games
Good European form has now transferred to the Premier League
Reasons to be fearful
Liverpool will be right at it after their win over City
Just one away win in the league this season
David Moyes’ West Ham are slowly coming to the boil after a difficult start to their season.
In fairness, they completed most of their transfer business later in the window than most, which means that the new signings needed time to settle, with the likes of Paqueta and Scamacca finding form now.
Time will tell, but Moyes could have a squad that is once again capable of challenging for those top eight spots this season, particularly if they can build up some momentum.
The one downside is that they must continue to play Thursday night football, thanks to their involvement in the Europa Conference League. This could stretch their squad throughout the season.
Against Liverpool, they have a poor record at Anfield. While they certainly have the players to cause their opponents problems, they must be at their very best and hope that Liverpool aren’t.
Star Man – Gianlucca Scamacca
The tall striker has the game to trouble the likes of van Dijk and Gomez if they are not at the top of their game. Only Bowen has matched Scamacca in terms of goals for West Ham this season.
Liverpool will boss possession
Should be an entertaining game
West Ham must score first to win
You get the feeling that if Liverpool score early, they will continue where they left off against City and go on to win the game comfortably.
Confidence plays a huge part in football and when Liverpool are on top, they are almost impossible to play against.
West Ham must start the match as they mean to go on, and try to take the game to the Reds. It won’t be easy, but if they can score first then they have a chance.
In truth, it looks like another Liverpool victory.
