In-form Leeds take on an Everton side desperate for first win of the season
Leeds to win 1-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Leeds, Elland Road
Bet NowLeeds have been a breath of fresh air so far this season, playing with an intensity and a quality that few would have thought possible when Marcelo Bielsa was sacked near the end of the last campaign.
Jesse Marsch has implemented a direct style of play into his squad, preferring to attack quickly rather than build-up play from the back.
It’s a system that worked a treat in their win over Chelsea, running out 3-0 victors on one of their greatest ever days in the Premier League.
In their last game, they suffered defeat to an exceptional Brighton side currently in the top three of the league. Nevertheless, they remained competitive to the end.
Everton are at the opposite end of the spectrum right now, fighting for their lives and also trying to secure their first win of the season.
It’s a desperate situation for one of the biggest and proudest clubs in England.
Anthony Gordon, whose goal salvaged a point against Brentford, could be leaving this week to Chelsea in a £60m deal. Where will they be if he leaves?
Reasons to be cheerful:
One of the league’s top scorers with seven goals
Could have striker Patrick Bamford back in the fold
Reasons to be fearful:
Lost two of their last three games against Everton
Opponents are desperate for victory
Leeds have become a well-established side in the Premier League since their return in 2020.
Although they have now switched managers, most of the original squad remains and it is their experience and quality that continues to lift them to new levels.
Despite the departure of players such as Kalvin Phillips and Raphiha, they have found new heroes, such as Rodrigo and Harrison.
In the defeat to Brighton, Leeds were poor in the first half, taking longer than usual to get going. By the time they got going, they found themselves a goal down against a team in great form.
At home, they will fancy their chances to put that right. Striker Patrick Bamford may also return to the matchday squad, although will sit on the bench rather than go straight into the starting XI.
Star Man – Rodrigo
Leeds’ top scorer was quieter against Brighton, although still had an opportunity in front of goal that he put wide. His quality will be a threat against Everton.
Reasons to be cheerful
Came close to victory in a battling performance against Brentford
Players seem to be responding to Lampard’s tactics, despite tough start to season
Reasons to be fearful
Gordon is their best route to goal, but could be sold this week
Could find it tough against Leeds’ intensity
Everton claimed a point against Brentford, despite taking the lead earlier on in the game.
However, their goal led a charmed life, with Brentford hitting the woodwork on three occasions. Maybe it’s the luck that Everton need to kickstart their season.
They need something to go their way, but it seems as though Anthony Gordon may depart Everton this week, in a £60m transfer saga that has lasted throughout the summer.
One positive is that star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is set to resume full training in the near future. His goals and link-up play have been sorely missed so far.
New signing Neal Maupay could add quality to that forward line when he eventually gets up to speed.
Against Leeds, however, they may struggle to cope with the intensity and the pressure of the Elland Road crowd.
Star Man – Anthony Gordon
Whether or not he plays will depend on if he remains at the club this week. He showed his class with a well-taken goal against Brentford.
Leeds will look to counter Everton quickly
If Leeds go in front, Everton’s confidence could collapse
Possession evenly shared
If Everton can take the lead here, Frank Lampard will hope that his side will learn their lesson from Brentford.
There, they allowed their opponents to equalise later in the game. If they have the opportunity, they must hold on for victory.
Scoring against this Leeds side won’t be easy, however, especially with the way Leeds press. If the opposite happens and Leeds go in front, you can see Everton struggling with the pressure they are under.
The home crowd could have something to say about it too.
