In the final game of the day, hosts Morocco lock horns with Mali at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah at 1:30 AM IST on Saturday. As the two highest-ranked sides in Group A, this showdown could well decide the group winners.

Morocco arrive with momentum after winning their opener, while Mali—held to a frustrating draw by Zambia—will be desperate to at least match that result, though a win would firmly put them back in control of their fate.

Current Standings: Morocco currently sit atop in Group A with a perfect three points, while Mali find themselves in a tight scrap for second place, level with Zambia on one point apiece.

Head-to-Head Record: Morocco edges out Mali in this fixture with a win-loss record of 4-1 in six matches.

Morocco Preview

For the Atlas Lions, the opener against Group A’s lowest-ranked side, Comoros, was expected to be routine. Instead, Morocco were made to toil through a frustrating, goalless first half. The deadlock finally broke soon after the restart when Real Madrid’s Brahim Díaz fired the hosts ahead, igniting the home crowd, before El Kaabi sealed the win in spectacular fashion with an acrobatic bicycle kick.

The victory, though, came at a cost—captain Romain Saïss was forced off injured inside 19 minutes, casting a shadow over Morocco’s campaign going forward.

There is, however, a boost for the Moroccan camp: designated skipper Achraf Hakimi, who sat out the opener, is fit and ready to return against Mali. With their talismanic full-back back in the XI, the Atlas Lions will back themselves to overcome Mali and seal an early spot in the round of 16.

Brahim Díaz and Ayoub El Kaabi stole the spotlight in the opener—now it’s Achraf Hakimi’s turn. Widely regarded as one of the game’s finest full-backs, Hakimi’s attacking influence is hard to ignore, with three assists and 11 key chances created in the World Cup qualifiers. His return could be decisive against Mali and pivotal to Morocco’s charge as the tournament unfolds.

Morocco  Probable Starting Lineup - Bounou (GK) ; Achraf Hakimi, Yamiq,  Aguerd, Noussair Mazraoui, Aynaoui  Amrabat, Ounahi, Saibari, Brahim Diaz, El Kaabii.

Mali Preview

The Eagles face a stiff test in their second outing as they take on tournament favourites Morocco after settling for a draw against Zambia in the opener. It was a frustrating start for Mali—victory slipped away after Willard Mwanza’s missed penalty and late defensive lapses that allowed Patson Daka a free header from a stoppage-time cross.

Those defensive lapses, coupled with three missed big chances from 15 attempts, will alarm Tom Saintfiet. Against Morocco, opportunities will be few and any loss of focus at the back could prove costly.

The last thing Mali want is a heavy defeat—one that would heap pressure on their final group game against Comoros, a side Morocco themselves found far from easy to break down.

Mali’s coach is expected to tweak his setup, with RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara likely to come into midfield to bring greater control in the centre of the park. Up front, Kamory Doumbia could be deployed as a false nine instead of a traditional striker—a role he fully capable of pulling off, having finished as the Eagles’ top scorer in the World Cup qualifiers.

Mali Probable Starting Lineup - Djigui Diarra (GK); Amadou Dante, Diaby, Fofana, Woyo Coulibaly, Amadou Haidara, Aliou Dieng, Sangare, Kamory Doumbia, Nene, Lassine Sinayoko.

Regardless of the tweaks Mali make, they are likely to play second fiddle for large spells, with Morocco boasting superior depth, quality, and proven match-winners. Though, the Eagles can draw confidence from how Comoros frustrated the hosts in the first half, and a draw would suit them just fine. Still, with Achraf Hakimi expected back in the XI, the Atlas Lions should carry even more attacking threat—making a Moroccan win the most likely outcome.
