Hosts Morocco lock horns with Tanzania in their Round of 16 clash in Rabat on Sunday at 9:30 PM IST. 

After a sluggish start, the Atlas Lions hit top gear in their final group game with a commanding 3-0 win over Zambia and will now look to assert their authority against the world’s 112th-ranked side. 

Tanzania, meanwhile, are already living a dream in their first-ever AFCON knockout appearance and, with nothing to lose, will aim to test the tournament favourites with grit and belief.

As the highest-ranked side in the tournament, Morocco were expected to cruise through the AFCON 2025 group stage, but the reality was far tougher. They were held scoreless in a tense first half against Comoros, followed by a dull draw with Mali where wastefulness in front of goal meant a penalty was needed to salvage a point. 

It was only in the final group game that the Atlas Lions truly flexed their muscles, sweeping aside Zambia 3-0 with goals in both halves, firing 19 shots with nine on target in a display befitting their status.

Despite the early stutters, Morocco still topped their group and booked a place in the round of 16, the very stage where they were knocked out 2-0 by South Africa last time. This time around, confidence will be higher with captain Achraf Hakimi back in action after getting valuable minutes in the final group game, and the Atlas Lions will expect their leader to start and guide them a step closer to the quarter-finals.

While Achraf Hakimi is bound to leave his mark as the tournament unfolds, the spotlight here falls on Ayoub El Kaabi and Brahim Diaz. The Atlas Lions’ attacking duo have carried Morocco’s attack so far, sharing six goals between them, and once again will be central to breaking down Tanzania’s resistance.

Tanzania etched their name into AFCON history in the final group game, holding a strong Tunisia side to a 1-1 draw. Feisal Salum’s equaliser sealed the point that, under Sami Trabelsi’s guidance, carried the Taifa Stars into the round of 16 for the first time ever in an AFCON competition. 

Despite failing to register a win in Group C alongside Tunisia, Nigeria and Uganda, Tanzania’s resilience paid off, as two hard-earned draws were enough to see them sneak into the knockouts as one of the best third-placed sides.

 The spirit shown in their narrow 2-1 defeat to Nigeria and the gritty 1-1 draw with Tunisia will give the Taifa Stars plenty of belief as they prepare to take on the Atlas Lions, knowing they can compete with Africa’s elite.

Tanzania’s hopes will hinge heavily on goalkeeper Zuberi Foba Masudi, who has already made 13 saves in just two appearances — the third-highest tally among keepers at the tournament. He sat out the final group game with a knock picked up earlier, but if fit, he’ll be central to keeping Morocco at bay. 

Up front, the Taifa Stars will look to their experienced spine, led by Ligue 1-based captain Mbwana Samatta and goal-scorer Simon Msuva, to make the most of any rare openings.

Morocco come into the clash as overwhelming favourites, riding a 17-match unbeaten run across competitions, with their last defeat dating back to August 2025 in the African Nations Championship against Kenya. 

During that stretch, they’ve already beaten Tanzania twice in World Cup qualifiers, both times by a comfortable 2-0 margin. Armed with superior depth, quality across the pitch, and the backing of home support, it’s difficult to see anything other than an Atlas Lions victory in this encounter.
