Most predicted that City would claim three points to kickstart their campaign against West Ham, and they did so with their usual dominance.
It didn’t take long for their new signing to announce himself. Erling Haaland, signed for an unbelievably low £52m, scored twice on his league debut. Without doubt, many, many more goals will follow this season.
The rest of the team looked pretty awesome too.
Bournemouth turned one or two heads by beating Aston Villa on the opening weekend. They looked confident, scoring within the first two minutes to mark their return to the Premier League with a bang.
Their task will be considerably more difficult here, however.
Few will expect Bournemouth to claim anything here. Their first challenge will be getting hold of the ball for any length of time.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Haaland has settled in perfectly
Won their last 11 games against Bournemouth
Reasons to be fearful:
Need to be careful of complacency
Bournemouth will not fear attacking them
This Manchester City team is as dominant as they come in the history of English football.
They have won the league four years out of the last five, and are going for three titles in a row. Their eyes will also be fixed on other trophies, such as that elusive Champions League, but the Premier League is their bread and butter.
With Erling Haaland leading the line, they can achieve anything they put their minds to this season.
Naturally, teams lose games, and Bournemouth will pose a threat here. However, with all the options City have at their disposal, this is the type of game in which they usually blow away their opponents.
Their record against Bournemouth is spectacular and they’ll be confident of continuing that here.
Star Man – Erling Haaland
He’s a player who looks like he can score in every game he plays. City will take time to adapt to the way he plays, but with two goals already, there could be no stopping him.
Reasons to be cheerful
Have good options across the pitch
Win on opening weekend will provide confidence
Reasons to be fearful
Will struggle to get the ball against City
A number of injury concerns for the newly promoted side
Scott Parker’s side have spent little in the summer window, with most of their players coming in on free transfers.
Therefore, it was something of a surprise how comfortable they looked against Aston Villa, who continue to spend a great deal each transfer window.
It’s not often a promoted side wins so comfortably on their opening weekend, and it’s a testament to their manager who has moulded them into a strong outfit.
If they continue in this vein, they should be fine this season.
This game, however, presents a real problem for them. They’ve lost their last 11 games against City, conceding a mammoth 32 goals.
Star Man – Kieffer Moore
The Welshman presents a goal threat for Bournemouth and got on the scoresheet last weekend. He’ll find it difficult to get service against City, however.
City to dominate possession – over 75%
City to score two or more goals
Both teams to struggle in the heat
With this set to be one of the hottest weekends of the English summer, both teams could struggle in the heat. However, this will favour the team that holds onto the ball longest which, of course, is City.
Bournemouth will struggle without the ball and when they get it, they’ll do well to get close to City’s goal.
Don’t be surprised to see Haaland on the scoresheet yet again, and it would be a shock if City don’t score at least two themselves.
