MANCHESTER CITY FC vs BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION Match Preview & Analysis

It appears that Manchester City are back to their very best in recent weeks, following a great run of form that has seen them close the gap on the top four and progress to the final of the Carabao Cup.

They outplayed Manchester United in the semi final of that competition and have pulled together a great run of form in the league of late, too.

After seven games without defeat, City are now level on points with 4th placed Tottenham, and should they win their two games in hand, will rise above Liverpool who are currently top.

On the other hand, Brighton are as close to the danger zone as City are to the top.

The Seagulls have amassed just two wins this season and, although they have just one defeat from their last five, are struggling desperately to turn solid performances into victories.

This could be one-sided.

Teams Preview

Manchester City FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WWWWW

Reasons to be cheerful:

Arguably the best team in the league on current form

Are combining a tight defence with sparkling attack

Reasons to be fearful:

Remain without Sergio Aguero through Covid-19 isolation

Fewest goals scored in the top half

Manchester City are in top form right now and face the luxury of three home games on the bounce against Brighton, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa over the next week or so.

They are certainly winnable for a team of City’s undoubted quality and, should they win all three, will likely take them very close to the summit of the league table.

Their lack of goals has been noted, although they put three past Chelsea in their last league fixture. Rather, it has been their watertight defence which has given rise to their improved form of late. Since the start of October, City have conceded four fewer goals than anyone else in the league.

When City, and manager Pep Guardiola, gather momentum as they appear to be doing now, they are worrying signs for the other teams in the division.

Star Man – Ilkay Gundogan

Has three goals in his past four league games. The midfielder has been one of City’s best attacking players in recent weeks.

Brighton & Hove Albion Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DDLDW

Reasons to be cheerful:

FA Cup win could breathe confidence back into team

Just one defeat from last five shows resilience in the league

Reasons to be fearful:

Have lost all six meetings against City in Premier League

Have never won a Premier League match in January

This will be Brighton’s 300th top-flight fixture, a moment to savour for fans no doubt, at least before the fixture starts.

Unfortunately, it could well be a game to forget if Manchester City play to their full potential, as we have witnessed over the past few weeks.

Brighton, for all their solidarity and toughness, are unable to come up with the quality which can win games, the main reason why they have only done so twice this season.

Their win in the FA Cup (albeit on penalties), may provide some confidence, but with nothing but historical defeat against City in the past, they will feel that a continuation of that cup form is unlikely.

They also remain without several key players: Welbeck, Connolly and Lamptey are all injured; Lallana is unwell and Bissouma is suspended.

Star Man – Leandro Trossard

Has looked Brighton’s most creative player this season and needs to fashion one or two chances against City for his side to stand a chance.

MANCHESTER CITY FC vs BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION Winning Prediction

City to have over 65% possession

At least two goals in the match

Brighton must not concede early to stand any chance

You feel that, with the way Manchester City are playing right now, Brighton must stay in the game for as long as possible. If they concede early in the match, they’re probably done for.

City can afford to make one or two chances up front, with the likes of Silva, Foden, Mahrez and Sterling all rotating currently, while still being creative.

Strange results can happen, but City are huge favourites here.
