Manchester City to win 3-1 and progress to the Semi-Finals!

  • Tournament: Champions League 2019-20
  • Venue: Lisbon, Estádio da Luz

Manchester City’s prize for defeating the mighty Real Madrid in the last round is a one-off tie against a team who finished seventh in the French Ligue 1. Even missing striker Sergio Aguero through injury, the rest of the team are on fire right now as they look to progress to the last four.

On paper, it seems a simple step towards the Semi-Finals, but manager Pep Guardiola will want to avoid complacency.

Despite their current form making City strong favourites to progress, Lyon has the tools to trouble most sides as they showed when knocking out Cristiano Ronaldo and co. the other night. In truth, Juventus performed poorly, leading to the sacking of then-manager Sarri. But Lyon proved their worth over two legs and will be out to cause an upset again in the Quarter-Finals.

Teams Preview

Manchester City FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps.): W L W W W

Reasons to be cheerful:

  • Players are hitting peak form at the right time
  • Pep Guardiola is desperate to win again in Europe

Reasons to be fearful:

  • Lyon have proved they can upset the big teams
  • No room for slip-ups in a one-off tie

Man City showed they are ready to take a step to the next level when they comfortably saw off Real Madrid over two legs.

They have been a top team in England for the best part of a decade, though have only gone past the Champions League Quarter-Finals stage once – in 2016.

It feels different this season, however. Even without their star striker, Sergio Aguero, the team are playing as well as they ever have. Kevin De Bruyne has elevated himself to the best midfielder in the world, Raheem Sterling now scores goals for fun (31 this season) and Gabriel Jesus is more than an able deputy for the injured Aguero.

But they will not want to dip in form now, especially without the security of a second leg.

Star Man – Kevin De Bruyne

He can unlock any defence with his outrageous range of passing. He will be key if City is to progress further in the tournament.

Olympique Lyonnais Preview

Form Guide (all comps.): W L L L L

Reasons to be cheerful:

  • Will be full of confidence after knocking out Juventus
  • Memphis Depay is in fine form

Reasons to be fearful:

  • Lack of wins recently
  • Opponents can score goals from anywhere

Although through to the Champions League Quarter-Finals, Lyon hasn’t actually won a game of football since March 1st. They relied on their precious away goal in the match against Juventus but in reality have lost their last four games. It is a trend they’ll need to buck quickly if they have any hope of reaching the Semis.

They certainly have a chance, however small it seems. With an in-form Memphis, they have one of the most talented forwards in Europe, while Moussa Dembele has attracted attention from bigger clubs this season.

They are also fairly reliable in defence – sitting deep and counterattacking is a likely tactic on Saturday.

Star Man – Memphis Depay

He scored the crucial away goal from the penalty spot against Juventus. His pace and dynamism will be key to Lyon’s slim chances of winning

  • Man City to boss possession, with Lyon sitting deep
  • Kevin De Bruyne likely to provide an assist, either for Sterling or Jesus
  • Lyon’s chances will rest on their ability to counter quickly

City would normally be expected to blow opponents like Lyon out of the water, and they may yet do just that.

However, history tells us that there are usually one or two twists and turns on the way, and Lyon will be confident that their quick forward play will create at least a chance or two. Whether they take them or not will shape their chances of winning.

Guardiola’s team are in great form and will look to control the game from the first whistle and grab an early goal if they can.

If they do, it could be a long night for Lyon.
