The Blue Brigade experienced an upset on home soil as they got routed 3-0 by a hungry Punjab FC side. Things got out of hand, as Yoel van Nieff had to pacify disgruntled fans after their loss. The home side were convincingly beaten by Punjab, which handed Mumbai their first defeat in 9 matches. The result didn't sit well with a group of fans who had voiced their displeasure after the match.

Van Nieff would approach the fans after the match and engage in a passionate exchange with them, aiming to pacify their anger. The midfielder was first heard asking the fans if they only support the side when they win and quickly urged them to stick by the players even during losses. Punjab’s talisman, Majcen was the architect of the first two strikes, as he and Vidal combined deftly to land the first blow in the added time of the first half.

The duo combined seamlessly, with Majcen finding Vidal making a surging run towards the MCFC box. A perfectly weighted pass allowed Vidal to unleash a powerful left-footed shot from outside the 18-yard box. The ball soared past a bewildered Mumbai City defence, nestling into the top left corner and giving Punjab FC a crucial lead.

Hyderabad suffered a similar fate against a spirited Odisha FC. Odisha FC ended their three-game winless run on Monday with an emphatic 6-0 victory against Hyderabad FC at the GMC Balayogi Stadium in Hyderabad. Hyderabad FC with their foreign forward line of Allan Paulista and Edmilson Correia caused some problems for Odisha FC but were dealt with by Mourtada Fall.

Eventually, the visitors struck first courtesy of Isak Vanlalruatfela’s opportunist strike in the 12th minute on his 50th ISL appearance. It was a pinball situation in the Hyderabad FC penalty area and Isak was the quickest to react as he steered it past Lalbiakhlua Jongte in goal. The initial period of the second half saw Odisha FC throw the kitchen sink at the Hyderabad FC backline and the hosts were simply out of answers.

Head to Head Record - Both teams have played each other 10 times. Mumbai has won 3, Hyderabad has won 2, with 5 games ending as a draw.

Current Standings - Mumbai City FC are languishing in 10th with 10 points after 8 games. Meanwhile, Hyderabad FC are a spot below in 11th with 7 points.

Mumbai City FC Preview

Despite an early spell of dominance from the Islanders, the Punjab Shers matched them step for step, gradually gaining control of the match and demonstrating their clinical finishing to make the most of their chances and claim all three points. Head Coach Petr Kratky shared his thoughts in the post-match press conference, blaming the loss on poor execution and decision-making on the field. “I’m not giving us excuses,” he began.

“We train together; everyone wants to play. It’s up to individuals, you know, how they understand each other, how they want to play, how they think. There were a lot of missed passes, and not understanding. You can see sometimes on the pitch—he passes, he’s not ready to receive. There are small things like that. I’m more disappointed in how we approach the game in terms of what we tell the boys and (they) try to execute it," Kratky added.

The Islanders' defensive lapses remain a major concern for the coach, as they have now conceded 13 goals in eight matches. However, Kratky acknowledged the need for improvement in every department to help them climb the points table. “Conceding (goals) is the problem—how we’re conceding, how we do the turnovers.

We have to look at that type of stuff,” Kratky said. “All areas need to improve because where we are on the ladder, how we played today, it’s just simply not good enough,” he added. Despite their struggles, Kratky remains steadfast in his belief in the team’s philosophy but emphasises the need for greater consistency, particularly in midfield.

Hyderabad FC Preview

Hyderabad FC head coach Thangboi Singto described it as one of the worst defeats of his career after his team endured a heavy 6-0 loss at home against Odisha FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Monday. The Yellow and Black were outplayed by the visitors throughout the match. Although Singto’s side registered more attempts on goal and shots on target, Odisha FC displayed exceptional clinical precision in front of goal, scoring six times to secure a remarkable victory and return to winning ways.

Singto suggested that the poor performance might have been due to ineffective utilisation of the international break, or perhaps a lingering sense of complacency following their previous away win against Kerala Blasters FC, contributing to a poor display against the Kalinga Warriors.

“There are two things here, maybe the break was too long or maybe, you know, we were dwelling too much on the win against Kerala Blasters FC,” Singto stated during the post-match press conference. “I think the break planning, in terms of the few days of break and then we came back to training, maybe, you know, whether the players were fresh or not fresh, whether the training was well planned in terms of intensity, all those things I need to go back and study myself first.

Stats That Matter - Hyderabad FC are ranked 12th in ball possession with 43.2%. They average 12.6 shots and 4.0 corners per game. Allan de Souza Miranda and Andrei Alba have scored 2 goals each this season. On the defensive side, the team makes an average of 20.9 clearances and 2.6 saves per game, the 8th best in the season. They have managed 15 tackles and 8 interceptions but conceded 2 goals per game.

Injury - No reported injuries.

Hyderabad Fc Probable Starting Lineup - Jongte (GK), Rafi, Saji, Sapic, Shrivas (DEF), Rabeeh, Rodrigues, Alba, Ramhlucchunga (MID) Correia, De Souza Miranda (FWD).

Both teams had to deal with hurtful, unexpected losses. You would expect that emotion to be brought out in this fixture. Things could either improve or go from bad to worse. Mumbai City FC having the home advantage should nick this victory. As for Hyderabad, only time will give them the answers they’re looking for.
