Manchester City looking for immediate response against Brighton after Liverpool defeat
Manchester City to win 2-0

Manchester City’s quest to win yet another Premier League title suffered a setback at the weekend, with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool delivering their best performance of the season to defeat the champions.
Pep Guardiola’s team were uncharacteristically poor going forward, with Liverpool’s defence having an excellent game to keep the likes of Erling Haaland quiet.
Often, Pep Guardiola’s teams bounce back in glorious style after a defeat, and you wouldn’t put it past them to inflict a big result on Brighton.
Roberto De Zerbi is still searching for his first win as manager of Brighton, with the club slipping from 3rd to 8th in that time.
There have been two draws and two defeats during that period, with no goals scored by Brighton in three of them.
The same squad remains from Graham Potter’s days, but it’s clear that some of that belief has gone.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Will expect to bounce back massively from Liverpool defeat
Have won every home game this season
Reasons to be fearful:
Failed to score against Liverpool for the first time in 19 league games
Midfield was unusually poor last weekend
Such was Liverpool’s poor start to the campaign, many expected for Manchester City to give them a good beating.
The Reds had already lost to Manchester United and Arsenal in recent weeks and City, having beaten the former quite comfortably, were in pole position to claim another three points.
As it happened, City were not at their best and Liverpool delivered their finest performance of the season so far. Guardiola’s men are far too good to allow one defeat to derail their campaign.
They will, however, demand an instant response here. They have, of course, won every home game so far this season and they will be expected to do so again here.
City have won 10 of their last 11 meetings with Brighton and, with their opponents suffering from mixed form right now, and expected to claim three points.
Star Man – Erling Haaland
City’s beast of a striker was kept quiet by Gomez and Van Dijk of Liverpool last weekend. He will expect himself to be among the goals once again here, having scored 20 already this season.
Reasons to be cheerful
Have played well against big teams this season
Overall play remains strong despite lack of wins
Reasons to be fearful
Quality in the final third is missing
Will fear a huge response from City
Brighton are now without a win from their last four, with De Zerbi becoming Brighton’s first manager to go as many games without claiming his first victory.
Their overall game has remained similar to their performances under Graham Potter, although they are lacking intensity and quality in the final third.
The goals have certainly dried up recently. After earning a 3-3 draw with Liverpool, the club has failed score in any of their last three.
While the likes of Welbeck, Gross, Lallana and Trossard all offer pace, trickery and determination, none of them are natural goalscorers.
Due to their style of play, they will probably create one or two chances against City. It is whether they have the quality to score from them or not that will count here.
Star Man – Leandro Trossard
The Belgian has been Brighton’s best player for much of the season, but cannot be expected to do it all on his own. He has scored all of the club’s last three goals.
City will dominate possession from the start
Brighton will create one or two chances
Expect a strong City performance
After suffering a defeat to Liverpool, and having a week since their last game, you would expect City to be right up for this one.
They know how important it is to stay in touch with Arsenal at the top of the table, so three points is vital here.
Brighton have enough quality to create chances, but it is whether they can take them while keeping City out at the other end.
The home side are heavy favourites to bounce back here.
