Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Leeds gave the feeling of ‘another week, another win’ for Pep Guardiola’s men. It hasn’t been quite like that so far this season, with the club still five points off Arsenal at the top.

True, City are looking in imperious form now that the World Cup is over and domestic football gets back down to business. Guardiola will have Mikel Arteta’s men firmly within his sights over the next few weeks.

With so many world-class players at his disposal, Pep can afford to rotate one or two players here and there and still come up with the same result.

For that reason, you worry about Everton here. They are not the most resilient of teams, having won just one of their last nine games in all competitions.

They could be on the end of a real hiding if they don’t play at their best. Frank Lampard did well to keep them up last season but, with just one point separating them and the bottom three, the pressure is back on.

Manchester City FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Won seven of their last 11 against Everton, going unbeaten in that period

Have opened the scoring in a league-high 12 games this season

Reasons to be fearful:

Their 2-1 home defeat to Brentford ended a run of 11 consecutive home wins

Winless in all four games they’ve previously played on New Year’s Eve

With Arsenal continuing their excellent form from before the World Cup break, Manchester City know that they need to go full throttle between now and the end of the season to overtake them.

Mikel Arteta’s men show no signs of slowing down, even without the injured Gabriel Jesus, so City will need one of their famous long winning runs to catch them up.

You feel that this will be a game where they show their full power, against a weak and discontent Everton side lacking confidence.

Although City are still missing Ruben Dias and Julian Alvarez, there are so many quality players waiting that it won’t make too much difference.

The likes of Phil Foden, Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva could come into the team having sat out in the win over Leeds.

Star Man – Erling Haaland

The Norwegian goal machine picked up where he left off before the World Cup break, bagging a brace against Leeds. He’s now the fastest-ever Premier League player to 20 goals, after a mere 14 appearances.

Everton FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Unbeaten in their last six New Year’s Eve matches

Took the lead against Wolves despite eventually losing

Reasons to be fearful

Have lost a joint-club record of 21 league games in 2022

On the verge of losing five consecutive matches

The warning signs have been there at Everton for several seasons now but times are getting tougher for Frank Lampard’s men.

There will only be so much patience that the Toffees’ board have for Lampard, with his team drifting closer and closer to the relegation zone.

If any of the bottom three – currently comprising Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Wolves – win their game, Everton will move into the bottom three if they lose here.

With Brighton, Southampton, West Ham, Arsenal and Liverpool next on their fixture list, they can ill afford a pummelling here.

Fortunately, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is available again after injury while Conor Coady should also return to the starting XI.

Star Man – Dominic Calvert-Lewin

How badly do Everton need Calvert-Lewin’s goals right now? With only 12 goals this season, only Wolves and Forest have scored fewer. Calvert-Lewin can be Everton’s saviour if he stays fit with a long run in the side.

     City will have 70%+ possession

Expect 10+ attempts on Everton’s goal

Everton’s best chance is to keep things tight early on

If Everton concede early here, they could be in for a thrashing.

They have lost a league-high 12 away games in 2022 and you wouldn’t feel confident in saying that this won’t be another.

City have got the wind beneath their sails (when don’t they?) and will smell blood here. Everton must keep things tight and try to counter, although a City victory is the likely outcome.
