As one team’s star rises, another one falls.

Manchester City had come under pressure due to a dip in form, at least by their high standards, although they appear to be back to their best. Three wins from four in the league leave them on Arsenal’s coattails at the top.

Pep Guardiola’s men appear more energetic and focused recently and have also progressed in the FA Cup last-eight. A win here would also move them nine points ahead of Manchester United in 3rd, at least for now.

On the other hand, Newcastle, having looked so impressive since the start of the season, are starting to find life a little tougher.

Having lost the Carabao Cup final to Manchester United last weekend, they must also address their concerning form in the league. Just one victory since the start of 2023 has seen them drop from 3rd to 5th.

They could find themselves as low as 7th if they lose here and Liverpool and Fulham win their respective games.

Manchester City FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Just one defeat from their last 15 meetings with Newcastle

Four wins from their last six in the league

Reasons to be fearful:

Need to win almost every game to catch Arsenal you would think

Were held to a draw by the Magpies earlier this season

Manchester City are the experts of performing when the going gets tough. In recent years, they have been the ultimate pressure team, as their list of trophies will tell you.

They will need a special end to the season to catch Arsenal at the top, however. It’ll take an incredible run, winning almost every game you would think, if they are to topple the Gunners.

That meeting between Guardiola and Arteta on 26th April will be vital in deciding where the title will head.

They have appeared more like their old selves of late. Phil Foden looks sharper, Julian Alvarez is contributing in front of goal, youngsters like Rico Lewis are thriving and their defence looks more settled.

Against Newcastle, they will face a team that has the look of a wounded soldier right now. Although they couldn’t find a way past the Magpies last time, they will feel confident they can here.

Star Man – Phil Foden

With three goals from his last two appears, Foden appears to have shaken off the troubles of the last month or so. He returned flat from the World Cup but looks as sharp as we’ve seen him.

Newcastle United Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Earned a thrilling 3-3 draw with City earlier in the season

Have had a full week to recover from disappointing final defeat

Reasons to be fearful

Defeat here would see them slip further down the league table

Just one league win in 2023

Newcastle have been the draw specialists throughout the entirety of this season, with 11 of them. Only Brentford can match that.

However, four of those have come within their last six league games and it is a run of form that has derailed their push for a top-four spot. Tottenham have overtaken them, and Fulham and Liverpool aren’t far behind.

Their disappointing defeat in the Carabao Cup final last weekend will have left them deflated. The remainder of their season will depend on how they pick themselves up and go again.

One of those 11 draws was a 3-3 thriller against City earlier in the season – a game that showed us why Newcastle were expected to do great things this season. They could do with more of that here.

Star Man – Miguel Almiron

The Paraguay international was kept quiet by Manchester United at the weekend, but he’ll be keen to repeat the goal he scored against City back in August. He’s a special player when he’s at it.

Manchester City will be full of confidence

Newcastle need to rediscover their old form

Game could be one-sided if City score early

We don’t yet know how Newcastle will respond after their cup final defeat last weekend. If they are feeling a little sorry for themselves, this could be a long afternoon for them.

City have the bit between their teeth right now and won’t be afraid of going for the kill right from the start. An early goal could settle things.

The Magpies have plenty of firepower up their sleeves but they just haven’t shown it so far this year.
