Manchester United head into this one in fine spirits having battered Roma in their midweek Europa League semi-final, netting six goals and almost certainly securing themselves a place in next month’s final.

The Red Devils have been in excellent form recently, going unbeaten in their last seven games following their exit in the FA Cup to Leicester. They’ve managed to cement their position in the top four, and will want to further secure 2nd place here.

With Leicester playing 24 hours earlier, the gap between them could be down to just two points, so United will want to increase that once more here.

Liverpool are also on a good run of form, unbeaten in five and winning three of those. They remain outsiders in the race for the top four, with Chelsea and West Ham in such good form above them, though with five games remaining they will still feel confident of turning that around.

Manchester United FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WWWDW

Reasons to be cheerful:

Haven’t lost to Liverpool at home since 2014 (one in last 15 meetings at Old Trafford)

Could equal their longest unbeaten run under Solskjaer

Reasons to be fearful:

Have only won just one of their last nine meetings with Liverpool

Big Six record has been disappointing for United this season

Manchester United know that just one more win from their remaining five matches of the season will be enough to secure them a top four position – they are 12 points ahead of West Ham with a superior goal difference.

They have been in excellent form recently too, going seven games without defeat, scoring 18 goals in that period and conceding just five.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be well aware that Liverpool will bring a much sterner test, but will hope that it is a more exciting game than the dull 0-0 meeting earlier in the season. In fact, most of United’s games against other big opposition have been disappointing, in truth.

This is their opportunity to change that.

Star Man – Edinson Cavani

Has scored in four of the last five games and his experience and quality up front have massively improved United this season.

Liverpool FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): LWDDD

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have won five of their last seven away games

Unbeaten in last five games in all competitions

Reasons to be fearful:

Have dropped 15 points from winning positions this season

Poor record away to Manchester United

On the face of it, it would appear that Liverpool have more to play for here than Manchester United, what with United’s top four place virtually secured and Liverpool’s under serious threat.

With Chelsea seemingly an unstoppable machine right now, occupying 4th place, it would take a real drop in form for Liverpool to sneak in with five games remaining.

Should they win here, however, it would certainly give them the boost in confidence which could spur them on.

Their front three will be desperate to get on the scoresheet here, with Salah, Mane and Firmino scoring just five goals combined from their last 32 appearances against United.

They have no new injury concerns here, with Henderson, Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip still sidelined.

Star Man – Mo Salah

Has scored against United already this season, and is in good form as his goal against Newcastle last week showed.

     Could be a tight encounter

Neither side will want to make it too open

     First goal could win it

Earlier in the season, fans will have been disappointed to watch these two put in a dull 0-0 draw, with very little action at either end.

With these two teams in decent form, we should see a better display of football, although it is unlikely to be an end-to-end classic.

One goal could win it, but with six draws between these two in the last nine games, another draw is most likely here.

Manchester United 1-1 Liverpool
