Shambolic Man United take on struggling Liverpool in huge clash
Liverpool to win 2-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Greater Manchester, Old TraffordBet Now
Another week, another low for Manchester United and their fans to endure in what has been a catastrophic start to the new Premier League season.
While all rivals have strengthened, and the likes of City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham all have wins under their belts, they have been left behind like never before.
With this latest 4-0 hammering by Brentford, it seems as though they can’t sink lower. Until the arrival of their fiercest rivals, at least.
Liverpool have been less-than-perfect themselves, having to come behind in both games only to earn draws. They currently sit four points behind City and Arsenal after two games.
Injury concerns don’t help, and now star striker Nunez is facing a three-match ban for headbutting an opponent in the last game.
There is so much riding on this game.
Reasons to be cheerful:
They must surely improve at some point
Squad has had nine days of training since last game
Reasons to be fearful:
Lost same fixture 5-0 last season
United look completely drained of confidence
After their first defeat of the season, against Brighton, United were linked with a host of players in the transfer market over the next week.
Following their latest loss against Brentford, things have so far been quiet on the signings front.
Whether that’s a good sign or not is unclear. What is worrying is that their squad is still hugely short of the quality it needs to improve.
Fans will have faith in ten Hag’s approach, especially as most people view the current failings as the fault of the players and the ownership.
Last season, United lost 5-0 to Liverpool in this fixture. You’d hate to think what will happen if a similar result occurs here.
A positive result could kickstart their season, and how they’d love to get one over Liverpool.
Star Man – Cristiano Ronaldo
If ever there was a player for the biggest occasions, it’s him. His team need him more than ever right now and United fans will fall back in love with Ronaldo if he can perform at his best here.
Reasons to be cheerful
Three consecutive wins over United
Just one defeat against them in nine games in all competitions
Reasons to be fearful
Aren’t firing on all cylinders right now
Have gone behind in both games this season
For all United’s problems right now, and there are many, Liverpool have one or two of their own.
Without a win so far, Jurgen Klopp’s men have looked a little short of their usual selves, conceding more than usual and not being as clinical in front of goal.
To make matters worse, £85m signing Darwin Nunez will miss the next three games as a result of being sent off against Crystal Palace.
Still, at this early stage of the season, three points make a big difference. One win could catapult them up the table.
However, as this is the final game of the weekend, Liverpool could find themselves seven points behind the leaders if City or Arsenal win their earlier fixtures.
Liverpool have good standing in this fixture of course. They beat United 5-0 away and 4-0 at home last season.
They are big favourites to win again here.
Star Man – Mo Salah
Liverpool’s talisman has a great record against United and will be keen to continue that here. He is the main man without Nunez.
Liverpool will dictate play
Expect the away side to score at least once
United’s hopes rest on Ronaldo’s shoulders
United’s troubles are not likely to ease this weekend, with the arrival of nemesis Liverpool.
Their opponents have the upper hand in recent seasons, and have the better players without question.
It may take one fixture for either side to regain their confidence, but at this stage it’s more likely to be Liverpool to come out as victorious.
