Manchester United aiming to revive form against tricky Brentford
Manchester United to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Greater Manchester, Old Trafford
Bet NowManchester United were handed a wake-up call at the weekend as they were on the end of a convincing beating by Newcastle.
Erik ten Hag’s team has now been replaced in the top three by Newcastle and kicked out of the top four altogether as Spurs earned a point from their game.
Their form has been poor for some time now, winning just two of their last six in the league and looking more fatigued with each passing game. They need a big response here.
Brentford’s own form has dipped a little of late, with the west London side dropping to 9th in the league. Thomas Frank’s team retain their quality going forward, although they have been a little loose at the back.
These two teams last played on the second weekend of the season, where Brentford thrashed Manchester United 4-0.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Won each of their last three home games against Brentford
And they’ve lost just one of their last 22 at Old Trafford this season
Reasons to be fearful:
Lost four of their eight games without Casemiro who remains absent here
Could go four consecutive games without scoring in the league
Manchester United have allowed themselves to be dragged back into a race for the top four, only a month or so after some believed them to be in battle for the title.
Since then, United have faltered in the league, winning just two of their last six and going their last three without scoring a goal. Their 7-0 humiliation against Liverpool came as part of that.
Positively, they now have two games at home, here against Brentford and then Everton. They haven’t lost at Old Trafford since that defeat to Brighton on the opening day of the season.
With only eight goals conceded at home this season – the fewest of any team – United are a mean opponent at Old Trafford.
They need to get back to winning form here.
Star Man – Marcus Rashford
Rashford was largely invisible in United’s defeat to Newcastle at the weekend, although he had very little help from his teammates. With 18 home goals this season, Rashford remains United’s best route to goal.
Reasons to be cheerful
Thrashed United 4-0 early on this season
Just one defeat from their last 16 league games
Reasons to be fearful
Just one clean sheet from their last six
Have struggled to convert draws to wins at times
Brentford handed Manchester United their first humiliating result of the season when the score ended 4-0 at the Community Stadium.
The Bees haven’t looked back since then and have become one of the best teams to watch this season. Their 3-3 draw with Brighton was as entertaining as the scoreline suggested.
Their one criticism would be in converting draws into wins – the Bees have 13 draws this season, more than any other team. They score plenty of goals but they concede more than not too.
Their record away to Manchester United isn’t optimistic, but with the quality of their players, you never know.
Star Man – Ivan Toney
Toney has 17 league goals this season, the most of a Brentford player since 1938. His goal against Brighton was brilliantly taken and always works well with the likes of Mbeumo too.
Possession will be evenly shared
Manchester United must get a grip on the game
Brentford will pose problems on the break
When these two teams met earlier in the season, Manchester United just couldn’t live with the energy, directness and intensity of Brentford and were well beaten.
They host Brentford now also in a period of bad form and they need a big performance to take back control of the race for the top four.
Several of their players look tired and out of form but they need some big performances here.
Brentford have pace and power when breaking forward in numbers but can they overcome United’s excellent home record?
Manchester United to win 2-1
