Could this be the season where Manchester United finally start to claw back some of the dominance City have held over them for the past decade?

In none of the previous 10 seasons have United finished above City in the Premier League standings, but they could go within a point of their close rivals if they were to win here.

United enter the contest in outstanding form, having won eight consecutive games including four in the league. This week, they progressed to the Carabao Cup semi-finals and will be full of confidence here.

City, as we know, are the masters of turning it on in the biggest games throughout a season. Although they are five points behind Arsenal at the top, they will be confidence in their own abilities of recovery.

Pep Guardiola’s men won the reverse fixture 6-3 back in October, but many feel that this could be a closer contest because of how United have improved dramatically over the course of the season so far.

What a game we have on our hands.

Manchester United FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Eight victories in a row in all competitions

Have scored three goals in four of their last five matches

Reasons to be fearful:

Have lost their last three meetings with City

Upcoming fixtures are considerably more difficult than recently

Manchester United’s progress is there for all to see under Erik ten Hag. From losing their first two games in dreadful fashion, to now sitting in the top four has been a remarkable turnaround.

They have suffered just the one defeat from their last 18 in all competitions and have built a winning form that has propelled them into the semis of the Carabao Cup and the 4th round of the FA Cup.

Some have commented on the quality of United’s opponents in recent times. It’s true that their upcoming fixture list is more daunting than it has been of late, with Palace and Arsenal to follow City.

United’s record against City hasn’t been anything to shout about in recent years. They have just one victory against Pep’s men from their last six meetings, which includes four defeats.

Still, with their home support and several players in excellent form, this is as good as chance as United have had to catch their neighbours.

Star Man – Marcus Rashford

Has scored in six successive games for United, eight in a row at Old Trafford, and has 15 goals for the season approaching the halfway mark. He’s United’s best route to goal and he must continue his fine form here.

Manchester City FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Always seem to find another gear when playing United

Several big players were rested in midweek

Reasons to be fearful

Defeat to Southampton in Carabao Cup will have been disappointing

League form has stuttered somewhat recently

As far as Manchester City are concerned, they’re in the middle of a dip in form by their sky-high standards.

They’ve won just two of their last four in the league, allowing Arsenal to build up a five-point gap at the top of the table, while they have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Southampton this week.

Pep rested several of his key stars in that game, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if he names a full-strength team against United and gets the result he needs. However, they are not quite the powerhouse they usually are.

Like United, City also have some tough fixtures coming up, with Tottenham, Wolves, Arsenal and Tottenham again at the start of February. We’ll learn about their title credentials over that period.

Expect the likes of Haaland and De Bruyne to return to the team after starting on the bench in midweek, while Pep must choose between the likes of Grealish, Foden and Mahrez for his two wide positions.

Star Man – Erling Haaland

Scored a hattrick, and provided two assists, as City tore United apart earlier in the season. United just couldn’t handle his pace, strength and intensity and Pep will hope his striker is in the same form again here.

Can United have more control over the game?

City will have a plan to outmuscle United

     Goals for Haaland and Rashford?

United’s biggest concern in recent years will not only be the goals that they concede to City, but also how they fail to have any sort of control over the games themselves.

Erik ten Hag' side have become better at dictating the play this season, although this will be a step up for them. Casemiro and Eriksen will need to have top games in midfield to keep City’s men quiet.

City, and Pep Guardiola, usually find a way of winning when the pressure ramps up. Having lost in the Carabao Cup in midweek, you can’t see City losing two games in a row.

If United play at their best, any result is possible, but City have all the ingredients to take three points.
