Manchester United continue to look a better side under Erik ten Hag with each game that they play this season, and have now forgotten their earlier worries from their first two defeats.
Yes, a thumping defeat to Manchester City gave them a stern reality check, but United have now won five of their last six league games. In all competitions, it’s eight wins from 10.
Not all of those have been thoroughly convincing. Some have been 1-0 narrow victories, while others have required backs-to-the-wall defending in the final minutes.
However, positive signs are there for all to see. This will present another test for them, of course, against a team that have big aspirations themselves.
Newcastle are also on a fine run of form, one that has seen them score nine goals in their past two games. The Magpies have only lost once all season and are now unbeaten in their last four.
Key players are performing well and those that have been injured are returning. There’s no doubt that they’ll cause United problems here.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Winning run of form shows confidence throughout the squad
Have lost just one of the last 37 home games against Magpies
Reasons to be fearful:
Newcastle have the forward players to trouble United
European fixtures could cause fatigue among players
Manchester United are making the right noises right now under Erik ten Hag.
The most important factor at a club like United is winning football matches. Another important factor is to play with a style and an attacking purpose.
On both of those points, United have improved in recent months. From sitting near the bottom of the table after their opening two defeats, the club are now one point off the top four with a game in hand.
Some of the players seem re-energised, such as Rashford, Dalot, and Shaw in recent weeks. Even Ronaldo appears back in some form upfront.
Make no mistake about it, however, they will have to work unbelievably hard to beat Newcastle, a team in top gear right now.
Star Man – Marcus Rashford
Rashford has five goals in his last nine appearances in all competitions and seems like a different player under ten Hag. He also appears incredibly sharp in his movements, proving that his fitness levels are perfect.
Reasons to be cheerful
Saint-Maximin should be fit to start
Their key players appear to be in top form
Reasons to be fearful
Poor record away to United
Have conceded more goals to United than any other team
Newcastle are riding the crest of a wave right now, at the peak of their form under Eddie Howe and looking to challenge the established Premier League elite.
They are yet to win against a Big Six team this season, although they earned a draw against Manchester City and pushed Liverpool close despite losing 2-1.
As they go up against Manchester United, Howe’s team are full of confidence, having scored nine goals in their last two games.
They’ll also have the likes of Saint-Maximin and Joelinton ready to come back into the starting line-up, although Isak is still on the treatment table.
Despite their dreadful away record against United, this could be one of their best chances to upset the Red Devils.
Star Man – Allan Saint-Maximin
The tricky winger has scored against United in recent times and caused them a world of trouble. If he is fit to start here, he could help sway the game in the Magpies’ favour.
Could be goals at both ends
Possession evenly shared
Possibly one goal to separate them
This one is hard to call.
Despite Manchester United’s good form, you feel that they are never far away from an average performance. An average performance against Newcastle will see them get beaten.
The Red Devils must be at their best to come away with three points here, with the likes of Rashford and Ronaldo in top gear.
Newcastle will fancy their chances of scoring at least once, but can they keep the home team out?
The hosts are favourites, but only if they play well.
