Bayern Munich to win 3-1 to progress to the Final!

  • Tournament: Champions League 2019-20
  • Venue: Lisbon, Estádio da Luz

Bayern Munich was so overwhelmingly superior against an awful Barcelona team that it only confirmed what most people thought anyway – that they are surely favourites to lift the trophy on Sunday. Everyone was at it – Muller scored twice, Lewandowski took his season’s tally to 54 and counting. Even Barca loanee Coutinho got two against his parent club. The confidence throughout this team has surely never been higher.

But if last season was the year of the comeback (think Liverpool, Spurs etc.), this is the year of the underdog shock. Lyon has already seen off giants Juventus and Man City, both expected to win comfortably against a team finishing seventh in the French league.

However, beating this Bayern team will require a performance rarely seen on a football field. They have reasons to be hopeful, but the German giants are heavy favourites here.

Teams Preview

Olympique Lyonnais Preview

Form Guide (all comps.): W W W W W

Reasons to be cheerful:

  • Appear unplayable currently – the best team in the world
  • Goals can come from almost every situation from multiple players

Reasons to be fearful:

  • Lyon are terrific on the break
  • A one-off match favours the underdog

What else is there to say about this Bayern team? They are on track to match their treble-winning achievements of 2012-13, with the current side arguably a better version than seven years ago.

Lewandowski is probably the best player in the world right now, the likes of Muller, Neuer and Thiago offer unparalleled experience, as well as youth and quality from Gnabry, Coman and Davies. There does not appear a weak area in the side.

They now just need to convert their brilliance into Champions League silverware – smart money would be on them lifting the trophy on Sunday.

They do need to be careful of Lyon, however. They will surely not present as easy an opponent as the toothless Barcelona did in the Quarters.

Star Man – Robert Lewandowski

This guy is just too good. 54 goals in 45 appearances, with the potential of another two games to come. He’s the best player in the world and is winning trophies for the best team in the world.

FC Bayern Munich Preview

Form Guide (all comps.): L L L L W

Reasons to be cheerful:

  • Like RB Leipzig, they are enjoying their underdog status
  • Lightning-quick attack

Reasons to be fearful:

  • Playing the best team in the world
  • Opponents have no obvious weakness

What a contrast this season has been for Lyon. Finishing seventh in Ligue 1 was underwhelming by their standards, never winning more than two games in a row all season.

In the Champions League, however, it has been a different story. In beating Juventus and Man City back to back, they’ve done what few would have thought possible by reaching the Semis for just the second time in their history.

Their flexible tactics suit Europe a little better than domestically, able to change from the relentless pressing of their opponents to sitting back deep to soak up pressure. This is something that has seen their attackers flourish lately.

Led by their talisman Memphis Depay and backed up by the likes of Dembele, Ekambi, Cornet and Dubois, they can shift from defence to attack in an instant. They will be encouraged that Bayern loves to play a high line, so watch out for balls played in behind.

It will, however, be extremely difficult to stop Bayern from breaking through.

Star Man – Memphis Depay

Has wasted no time since coming back from injury. His penalty set Lyon on their way against Juventus and was instrumental in the win against City.

  • Bayern to dominate possession, with Lyon looking to break fast
  • Midfield tactical battle will be key
  • Four or more goals in the match

The teams are bidding to meet either PSG or RB Leipzig in Sunday’s final – the stakes don’t come higher than this. If Lyon can keep the game tight, they will fancy their chances on the break.

But after seeing what Bayern did to Barcelona the other night, it’s fair to say that no team can stop Bayern from scoring. They will like their chances of progressing through to the 11th Champions League final in their history, and so do we.
