Manchester United were handed one of their worst-ever days last weekend, when they were embarrassingly destroyed by a resurgent Liverpool side at Anfield.

That 7-0 defeat will live long in the minds of players, the manager and the supporters and you feel that they will want to right those wrongs immediately here.

They played in midweek, beating Real Betis in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 16 clash, perhaps showing that the cobwebs have been blown away.

As for Southampton, the appointment of Ruben Selles appears to have come at the right time for the club in their fight for survival.

In beating both Chelsea and Leicester, the Saints moved off the foot of the table at the expense of Bournemouth – it’ll all be for nothing, of course, if they fall back to winning ways in upcoming matches.

Manchester United FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Unbeaten in 14 matches against Southampton

And, they haven’t lost in their last 21 home games in all competitions this season

Reasons to be fearful:

Aiming to avoid consecutive defeats for the first time since August

Has the defeat against Liverpool damaged their run of form?

Manchester United’s defeat against Liverpool was as bad as they come. Only time will tell if that result has damaged United’s confidence enough to derail their season.

As it stands, United remain in an excellent position – not only are they 3rd in the league, they also have promising fixtures in the FA Cup and Europa League to look forward to this month.

Not only that, they have a great record against their opponents here this weekend. Southampton haven’t beaten United since 2016 and the next goal the Red Devils score against the Saints will be the 100th.

Their form at home has been exceptional of late too. In 15 consecutive home matches, they have scored two or more goals, the first time they have done so for 22 years.

They will look to use this game as a road to recovery after last weekend.

Star Man – Marcus Rashford

Rashford can equal Wayne Rooney’s United record of scoring in eight consecutive home league games if he scores against Southampton. His form has been exceptional over the past few months.

Southampton FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Appear to be on the road to recovery under Ruben Selles

Are the only Premier League side to collect more points away from home this season

Reasons to be fearful

Carlos Alcarez is a doubt after suffering an injury against Leicester

Won just two of their last 28 games against United

On the one hand, Southampton will look back to their last away league win – a 1-0 victory over struggling Chelsea – and think that they could repeat that result here against Manchester United.

They are certainly enjoying a new manager bounce right now, despite still remaining inside the bottom three. It would appear that Ruben Selles has lifted the spirits within the Saints dressing room, at least for now.

On the other hand, Southampton very often fare poorly against the Red Devils, particularly away from home. Just two wins from their last 28 meetings, the most recent coming seven years ago.

A win here would see them sail out of the bottom three and potentially as high as 16th.

Star Man – James Ward-Prowse

It was unlike Ward-Prowse to miss a penalty in Southampton’s win over Leicester last weekend but he’s the heartbeat of this side. He needs one more free-kick goal to equal David Beckham’s total for Manchester United.

     Manchester United should dictate possession

An early goal for the Red Devils could be fatal to Southampton

The longer this game stays goalless, the more nervy United will get

Manchester United know that they need to find a victory here to bounce back from their historic beating last weekend. Anything less will be seen as another failure and possibly the start of something bigger going wrong.

A victory, on the other hand, reduces last weekend to an embarrassing blip. Three more points could take them further away from Tottenham and Liverpool behind them, while keeping up the pressure on Manchester City.

Southampton also need points and must stay in the game for as long as possible.

United are favourites, of course.
