Manchester United were left with a frustrating result at the weekend, forced to settle for a 0-0 draw at home to Newcastle.

It was an even contest for the most part, although the Red Devils wasted two excellent chances at the end to claim all three points. Fred and Marcus Rashford were the wasteful duo on that day.

It means that United have slightly fallen off the pace in the race for the top four, with Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal all winning at the weekend. Can they return to winning form here?

Tottenham are a very tough nut to crack under Antonio Conte, claiming their seventh win of the season at the weekend, including four from their last six.

Although they don’t play the most attractive football, they know how to win matches. Harry Kane is also in top form, which helps considerably.

They will head to Old Trafford full of confidence at securing all three points, to keep up their charge towards the top of the table.

Manchester United FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have won their last three games against Tottenham

Just one defeat in seven league games

Reasons to be fearful:

Concerns over availability of Eriksen and Rashford

Do they have the creativity to break down this Spurs side?

On a positive note, the game against Newcastle is one that Manchester United may have lost last season, at a time when they were vulnerable in almost every game.

Largely, they defended well against a dangerous team and could have won the game with a couple of excellent chances near the end.

This is another such test, against a Tottenham side that looks stronger than any we’ve seen over the past five or so years. Under Antonio Conte, they are simply a machine.

While United have an excellent record against Spurs, both in recent years and overall, they will be made to suffer here, and will need to be at their best to win.

Erik ten Hag must also consider how to use his squad appropriately. With Chelsea to follow at the weekend, he could make one or two changes here. It also remains to be seen whether Christian Eriksen will be well enough to play.

Star Man – Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo scored a hattrick in the most recent meeting of these two sides, earning his team a 3-2 win last season. If he had remained on the pitch against Newcastle, United would have probably won the game.

Tottenham Hotspur FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Level with Manchester City on points in 3rd place

Seven wins from 10 games represents exceptional form

Reasons to be fearful

Have lost more games against United than any other opponent

Will miss the injured Richarlison for up to two weeks

Tottenham are looking very dangerous right now, quietly going about their business on a game-by-game basis to keep in touch with Manchester City and current leaders Arsenal.

Only Newcastle have a better defensive record than Spurs this season, while only Arsenal and Manchester City have scored more. Both attack and defence has been more successful than those of Manchester United.

They must do without the injured Richarlison here, who will be injured for a couple of weeks. Such is the strength of Spurs’ squad that Kulusevski, Lucas or even Perisic could come in and do a fine job.

While Spurs don’t have a good record against Manchester United, you feel that this is the season where they could turn that around, if they play as they have been so far.

Star Man – Harry Kane

Has only five goals from his 17 appearances against United, but Kane is in red-hot form right now. The England striker has 10 goals from 14 games this season.

     Can United keep Kane quiet?

United could struggle if Eriksen is ruled out again

     Should be an even game

Manchester United are likely to make at least one change here, particularly in their midfield.

If Christian Eriksen is well enough to return, that is the best option for United ahead of Fred. If not, then Scott McTominay should come back in after his one-match suspension.

Their midfield will need to be at its best to stop the machine that is Tottenham’s.

Much will also be decided by whether United can keep Kane and Son quiet or not.

It’s set up to be a close game, but at home you feel that United may have the edge.
