If other results go their way this weekend, Manchester United could move into the top four for the first time this season under Erik ten Hag.

It would represent a dramatic shift in form for United having spent some time in the relegation zone this season, losing their first two games.

Since then, they have only lost two of their next 15 games in all competitions. It is a run that has seen them beat the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham to rise swiftly up the table.

They also earned a credible point against Chelsea last weekend.

West Ham have also improved their fortunes greatly over the past month or so. While they started the league season poorly, their Europa Conference League form has spurred them on recently.

Now in 10th place, they will hope to cement a top half spot for the remainder of the campaign and even push on towards the European spots.

Manchester United FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have won their past four games against West Ham

United’s style of play is now seeing them command matches

Reasons to be fearful:

Still a feeling that they must score more goals

West Ham are in a good run of form right now

If United are to move into the top four, they will need Newcastle and Chelsea to drop points ahead of them.

However, if Erik ten Hag’s men can continue their fine form of late, it will only be a matter of time before the close the gap. They are three points off 3rd with a game in hand, after all.

They must still do better in front of goal, it has to be said. In none of their last four league games have they scored more than twice, something which has led to one or two nervous finishes to games.

While they dominated the first half against Chelsea last weekend, they weren’t able to take advantage of several good chances in front of goal.

At home against West Ham, they will once again be favourites to claim three points. However, West Ham have the tools to keep United quiet at their best, so United will need to work hard and be patient going forward.

Star Man – Marcus Rashford

United’s forward is looking as fit and as sharp as he has for some time this season. He needs to improve his finishing in front of goal, but his pace and creativity can be a real threat against West Ham.

West Ham United FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Have won six of their last eight games in all competitions

Sitting in the top half will give them confidence

Reasons to be fearful

     Poor record against Manchester United

European commitments could place strain on their squad

West Ham’s season continues to build momentum as it progresses and David Moyes can be pleased with the turnaround his team have made.

Another big club, Leicester, took a lot longer to get going this season and remain near the relegation places.

The difference is that West Ham made some strong signings over the course of the summer, with Scamacca and Paqueta looking good so far.

Paqueta, alongside Craig Dawson and Maxwell Cornet are all injury concerns for the game against Manchester United, although they have a decent squad these days.

Another concern, of course, is how much energy it takes to play in European fixtures too. Both West Ham and Manchester United played on Thursday, but the home team arguably have the better all-round squad.

Do this West Ham team really believe they can go to United and win?

Star Man – Gianluca Scamacca

The tall Italian will fancy his chances against the small centre back Lisandro Martinez of Manchester United. He was rested for an hour in midweek so will be fresh for this one.

Should be a good game of football

     Both sides will have chances

Will Ronaldo play for the Red Devils?

As always these days, one of the main questions will be whether Cristiano Ronaldo plays or not.

He played the full 90 minutes against Sheriff in midweek, which suggests he could have to make do with a place on the bench.

Regardless, United usually play better without him these days.

West Ham will pose a threat here, especially if United allow them time to put crosses into the box.

However, with the likes of Rashford on form, Manchester United should claim victory.
