Manchester United’s Champions League hopes were dealt a major blow over the last seven days as they lost to Brighton and West Ham in quick succession.

By all accounts, United have played the most games of any team across Europe this season, and it showed in those two games, with the players looking tired and out of ideas.

This was their first full week between games since the World Cup ended in December. Erik ten Hag will hope that they are refreshed and ready for the final push here.

Wolves have done the hard work required of them to achieve safety this season, and are sitting comfortably on 40 points.

The Wanderers have been a match for anyone at home recently, although their away form has been less than stellar and they may struggle to bring another big performance here against an opponent desperate for victory.

Manchester United FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Kept five clean sheet in a row at home

Rafa Varane set to return after two months out

Reasons to be fearful:

Just one victory from their past four against Wolves

Could suffer three consecutive defeats for the first time since 2015/16

Erik ten Hag’s press conference before this game was full of mixed news, with Marcus Rashford a major doubt for the game after suffering from a leg injury.

On a more positive note, Rafael Varane is set to return from a two-month injury layoff in a huge boost to Erik ten Hag’s defence. They haven’t conceded at Old Trafford in their last five games, however.

Indeed, it is in attack that they have suffered of late, with tired legs and jaded minds coming to the fore in recent games. They’ve only managed one goal from their last 315 minutes of football.

With Rashford missing, they need to hope that the likes of Martial, Sancho, Antony and Fernandes can step up to the mark here.

They don’t have the best record against Wolves, losing this fixture 1-0 last season. Worryingly, the team playing away has won this fixture on the last four occasions.

United simply have to win here, with Liverpool breathing down their necks.

Star Man – Bruno Fernandes

Fernandes has played virtually every minute for United this season, and has looked tired in recent games. He can galvanise his teammates when at his best, as he needs to be again here.

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Just one defeat from their past four meetings with United

Four wins from their past six have secured Premier League safety

Reasons to be fearful

Winless in six games away from Molineux

Lost 10 of their last 11 against top four teams

Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui has promised to hand more playing time to fringe players over the remaining three games, given their comfortable position in the league.

That sort of talk, alongside the fact that they have lost four of their last six away games, should hand the advantage to Manchester United, with the Wanderers having little to play for but their pride.

The Wanderers have also lost 10 of their last 11 away games against teams starting the day inside the top four, although Lopetegui will at least want his players to put the home side under pressure here.

After all, they won this fixture 1-0 last season with a late Joao Moutinho goal.

Star Man – Ruben Neves

Neves has been on the winning side three times over his career against United and often saves his best performances for the bigger teams. He’ll be key to Wolves achieving a positive result here.

United must win here to keep top four hopes alive

     First goal will be crucial

     Wolves happy to sit back

With Liverpool closing the gap to just a single point, Manchester United simply can’t afford to not win this game. Erik ten Hag’s men have had a rare week off and they have to come into this game fit and fresh.

They may be missing Marcus Rashford, but the remaining attackers have to prove their worth in front of goal here. An early goal could help settle the nerves.

If Wolves score first, like Brighton and West Ham did against United recently, then heads could drop again for the home side.

They should have enough, however.
