Reigning champions NorthEast United begin their Durand Cup title defence on Saturday against Bodoland FC in their Group F opener. The Highlanders will be aiming to retain the trophy and become only the fourth team in the tournament's history to win three consecutive titles. 

Bodoland FC, meanwhile, will look to build on last year's impressive quarterfinal run and spring an early surprise. Rounding out Group F are Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC and FC Goa.

After a disappointing ISL campaign that saw them finish ninth last season, NorthEast United will be eager to make a strong start to the new campaign in the Durand Cup. The Highlanders, however, have made this competition their own, going unbeaten across the last two editions and lifting back-to-back titles. 

Their emphatic 6-1 win over Diamond Harbour in last year's final also made them the first team in the 21st century to successfully defend the Durand Cup crown.

A major driving force behind that success was Alaaeddine Ajaraie, who registered 12 goal contributions (eight goals and four assists) in just six matches to win both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball. Back after a loan spell in Indonesia, the Moroccan will be keen to pick up where he left off and lead NorthEast's charge once again.

The defending champions have also strengthened their squad with experienced overseas additions, including Serbian playmaker Nikola Ninković, Spanish defender Eneko Satrústegui, Antonio midfielder Moyano and forward Ethyan González, while promising Indian youngster Pramveer Singh has arrived from Punjab FC. 

With Juan Pedro Benali retaining the core of his title-winning side and adding quality reinforcements, NorthEast United look well-equipped for another title defence.

Established in 2022, Bodoland FC have quickly emerged as one of the rising forces in Indian football. Since making their Durand Cup debut in 2023, the Assam-based side has grown with each campaign, enjoying a breakthrough in the 2025-26 edition. 

They topped their group with three wins from three matches, including a memorable victory over ISL side Punjab FC, before their impressive run was halted by eventual champions NorthEast United in the quarterfinals.

The club has further strengthened its squad ahead of the new season with the signing of local star Halicharan Narzary, who played a key role in Diamond Harbour's I-League-winning campaign with three goals and two assists. 

Experienced defender Shubham Sarangi and attacking midfielder Norberto Emaus have also been brought in, adding quality and experience as Bodoland look to build on last season's success.

While lifting the 2022 Inter Sixth Schedule Council Premier Football League remains a landmark achievement, the Durand Cup continues to provide Bodoland with the ideal stage to test themselves against stronger opposition and showcase their progress.

NorthEast United have dominated this fixture, winning both previous meetings against Bodoland FC without conceding a goal, including a commanding 4-0 quarterfinal victory last season. On paper, the Highlanders once again look the stronger side and will start as favourites as they chase an unprecedented third consecutive Durand Cup title. 

That said, Bodoland have shown they can be defensively resilient, conceding just once during last year's group stage. If they can reproduce that discipline, they have the chance to make this a closely fought contest. Otherwise, NorthEast's superior quality could turn it into another one-sided affair.
