Newcastle will be proud of the way in which they have managed to knock some decent form together and almost certainly save their season.

With a nine-point gap to 18th place Fulham, Newcastle can breathe a small sigh of relief and, unless there is a huge turnaround in the situation, should be able to start planning for next season.

Having earned two wins and two draws from their last five, they actually come into this fixture in better form than Arsenal and will feel confident of gaining some here too.

Arsenal’s dreadful league form finally caught up with them in the Europa League too, where they were handed a 2-1 defeat in their semi-final first leg against Spanish side Villareal. You would expect a response from the Gunners here, but with their form being so mixed this season, it’s hard to know what to expect.

Newcastle United Preview

Form Guide (all comps): LDWWD

Reasons to be cheerful:

In better form than their opponents right now

Just one defeat from their last eight

Reasons to be fearful:

Have lost 16 of the last 17 meetings with Arsenal

Kept just one clean sheet from the last 20 home league games

In a strange turn of events, the way in which these two sides are now playing, you’d almost back Newcastle as favourites here.

A few weeks ago, when they were only a point away from the relegation zone, it was a different story, but with two wins and as many draws from their last five games, they’re virtually safe this season.

This has mainly been down to having their big guns back and firing up front, with Wilson and Saint-Maximin having a positive effect since returning from injury.

The Magpies’ shocking record against Arsenal will be a worry for their fans regardless of recent form, having only beaten the Gunners three times in the last 22 home games.

Unfortunately, in form striker Joe Willock is unable to play against his parent club.

Star Man – Callum Wilson

Has been instrumental since returning from injury a few weeks ago.

Arsenal FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WWDLL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Great record against Newcastle over the years

This is their joint-longest unbeaten run under Arteta

Reasons to be fearful:

Poor Europa League defeat in midweek

Their 13 league defeats is the joint-worst in Arsenal history

Arsenal will have hoped to come into this game on the back of a stirring Europa League win in midweek, however that was far from the case.

They were poor against Villareal, and despite clawing a goal back, will face a 2-1 deficit in the return leg next week. The Europa League has been their salvation this year, as well as their only chance of European football next season, however their poor league form caught up with them.

That said, they’ll be determined to put that right here, and could have Aubameyang back in the side after the African striker has missed recent games due to illness.

They have a great record against Newcastle, but will be wary of the Magpies’ recent upturn in form.

Star Man – Nicolas Pepe

Has hit some form in front of goal in recent times, scoring in Europe in midweek.

     Should be an entertaining game

Plenty of goal opportunities with both defences struggling

A Newcastle win would secure safety

In normal times, you would expect a strong Arsenal team to wipe the floor with a Newcastle side near the bottom of the table.

This season has been far from normal, of course, and Arsenal have suffered through a disappointing season of their own.

A win here is far from guaranteed and, although they have some fine players, Newcastle’s men have hit form too. The points could be shared here.
