Newcastle in search of a rare victory against managerless Bournemouth
Newcastle to win 2-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Newcastle upon Tyne, St James' Park
Bet NowNewcastle were on the receiving end of some questionable refereeing in their 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace. There, Joe Willock was seen to have fouled Palace’s goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.
A win has been hard for Newcastle to come by, and their results haven’t matched the quality of their performances, which have been good on the whole.
Bournemouth have been without a full-time boss for a few weeks now, following the sacking of Scott Parker after the 9-0 defeat to Liverpool.
Gary O’Neil has done a good job of steadying the sinking ship on the south coast, with the Cherries claiming a draw and a win from their next two matches.
Here, both teams will be eager to pick up three points and push on further up the table. Newcastle are two places higher up the table, but Bournemouth are level on points and have won more recently.
Reasons to be cheerful:
New signing Isak has had a positive impact on the club
Won three of their last four games against Bournemouth
Reasons to be fearful:
Performances have fallen away since opening day victory
Wilson, Guimaraes and Saint-Maximin have been out through injury
Newcastle have just the one win so far this season, despite some promising football.
They’ve only faced defeat once, it must be said, going down 2-1 against Liverpool a few weeks ago. However, since that opening day victory against Nottingham Forest, they have yet to find a path to winning ways.
Much of that has been down to injury concerns. Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin and Bruno Guimaraes, three of Newcastle’s most talented players, have all spent time on the sidelines recently, damaging their scoring potential.
While Wilson remains on the injury list, new signing Alexander Isak has slotted in well up front and is set to continue that here.
The likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin could return to the Newcastle side here, providing a much-needed boost in attack.
Can they heap more pressure on Bournemouth, a club currently without a permanent manager?
Star Man – Alexander Isak
The former Real Sociedad striker has slotted into Newcastle’s team well and already has a goal to his name. His pace can cause West Ham some issues.
Reasons to be cheerful
Interim manager O’Neil has done well to improve the players’ confidence lately
Comeback win over Nottingham Forest will have been great for morale
Reasons to be fearful
Have conceded a joint-record 18 goals so far this season
Poor record against Newcastle in recent years
It’s been a stark turnaround for Bournemouth since they sacked their manager just a couple of weeks ago.
Scott Parker was sacked from his position after a humiliating defeat to Liverpool, with many predicting that the club would sink further into trouble and head onwards to an inevitable relegation.
Instead, caretaker manager Gary O’Neil has breathed some life into these players. Their next two results have been much more positive, earning a draw against Wolves before coming from behind to beat Nottingham Forest.
They’ll be in for a tough game here, however. Their record against Newcastle has been poor in recent years, coming away from their last five games without a win.
It’s a long road to survival for Bournemouth this season, but can they continue their revival here?
Star Man – Dominic Solanke
The former Liverpool striker scored his first game of the season in their comeback win over Nottingham Forest last weekend. Can he help his club continue their revival here?
Having Saint-Maximin and Guimaraes back will help Newcastle’s attack
Home fans will be desperate for only second win
Bournemouth will spend long spells without the ball
Newcastle have suffered several injuries to key players, but must find a way past that to continue the good work done by Eddie Howe’s team.
If the likes of Saint-Maximin and Guimaraes can return in good form, they could propel their side to victory here.
Either way, they are expected to overcome a Bournemouth side in transition.
