High-flying Newcastle have Chelsea in their sights with Blues struggling
Newcastle 2-2 Chelsea
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Newcastle upon Tyne, St James' ParkBet Now
Newcastle continue to take the Premier League by storm, rising up to 3rd in the league after a stunning run of four wins on the bounce.
Eddie Howe’s men have only been defeated once all season, the same number as Arsenal and Manchester City, and have been scoring goals for fun of late.
Their squad is now well-rounded and well-coached, and you wouldn’t put it past them creeping into the top four come the end of the season too. Can they make it five wins in a row here?
On the other hand, Chelsea have been disappointing of late, with the early shine of Graham Potter’s arrival rubbing off with a string of poor results.
They have lost their last two in the league, as well as their midweek Carabao Cup game against Manchester City.
The Blues have seen their top four hopes slip away for the time being, although three points here would bring them back into the mix.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Best defensive record in the league alongside Arsenal
Unbeaten in their last 10 games in all competitions
Reasons to be fearful:
Chelsea will have a point to prove after a poor run of form
Have lost seven of their last eight against the Blues
Newcastle are a team to be reckoned with right now and it seems that no one is going to relish coming up against the Magpies this season.
It is a sign of things to come from a club that now has serious financial backing in the transfer market and a fabulous coach at the helm. Their squad has improved immensely over the past 12 months.
There have been many strange results and surprising league positions this season, but Newcastle are not one of them. They deserve to be where they are, inside the league’s top three, based on their superb form.
The likes of Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes are in the form of their lives and the scary thing is that the club can only get better as more money is spent in future transfer windows.
Now, they can test their progress against a side that have traditionally beaten them season after season. The Magpies only have three wins from their last 16 meetings with Chelsea.
Star Man – Miguel Almiron
The Paraguay forward has been in sensational form this season and continues to go from strength-to-strength. He has eight goals in his 15 games so far this season.
Reasons to be cheerful
Great record against Newcastle over the years
Aubameyang has a fantastic record against the Magpies
Reasons to be fearful
The way that their form has dropped off is concerning
Don’t seem to have an identity on the pitch
After Chelsea’s impressive start in their first month or so under Graham Potter, that form has now dipped off and the players are starting to look a little rudderless.
In either their defeat to Arsenal in the league last weekend, or their midweek defeat in the Carabao Cup, it was difficult to see what their overall gameplan was.
Much has been made of how Potter chops and changes his team and his tactics, sometimes his formations, from game to game. Is this really helping his players settle into a successful system?
The Blues couldn’t have asked for a much tougher game to finish on before the World Cup break. They will need to be at their best to go away to Newcastle and claim three points.
Star Man – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
The former Arsenal striker was quiet against his old club last weekend, but has an excellent record against Newcastle. He has nine goal involvements in his nine appearances against the Magpies.
Both teams will have chances
Home crowd will be right behind Newcastle
Goals at both ends
Newcastle enter this game as favourites for the first time in a very, very long time.
Due to their success, and their financial backing, Chelsea have always had the upper hand in these contests but are Newcastle finally turning the tide?
At home, you would back the Magpies in most games, although you feel that Chelsea must put in a big performance here.
