Newcastle and Crystal Palace both hoping for run of form after securing wins in last match
Newcastle 1-1 Crystal Palace
Tournament: Premier League 2020-2021 | Venue: Newcastle upon Tyne, St James' Park
Bet NowNewcastle earned a surprise first win in nine matches against an Everton side who had previously been on a run of good form.
The Magpies appeared set to continue their drift towards the relegation zone, with teams both above and below them collecting points at a greater rate than the North East club.
Whether or not that win can revive the energy around Newcastle is another matter, but they’ll certainly feel a little bit of the huge pressure on their shoulders has been eased.
Crystal Palace also earned a rare win at the weekend, seeing off fellow bottom half strugglers Wolves in a tight 1-0 victory.
Palace appear unable to string together a run of good form, however, having not won back-to-back league games since the first two fixtures of the season. They won’t struggle for survival this season, though they will surely be disappointed at an inability to kick on towards the top half.
Form Guide (all comps): LLLLW
Reasons to be cheerful:
First win in nine will boost their confidence
Callum Wilson showing his quality against Everton
Reasons to be fearful:
Have only won back-to-back league fixtures once this season
Captain Lascelles will be missing with a hamstring issue
Newcastle United eased the pressure on their and their manager’s shoulders with a well-deserved win over Everton last weekend. Callum Wilson, scoring his 9th and 10th goals of the season, secured the victory.
The win moves The Magpies further away from the bottom three and means that they can start thinking about places higher up the table should they be able to pull together some kind of momentum here.
Despite the injury to captain Jamaal Lascelles, Steve Bruce should have a relatively fit squad to choose from, including Saint-Maximin who may be ready for a first start since returning from Covid-19 last month.
Against Palace, Newcastle must be positive, knowing that their opponents haven’t won away from home in their last four games.
Star Man – Callum Wilson
Showed at the weekend that if he gets chances, he’ll put them away with two finely taken goals against Everton.
Form Guide (all comps): LDLLW
Reasons to be cheerful:
A kinder fixture schedule in February
Win over Wolves will have boosted confidence
Reasons to be fearful:
Several injuries mean a weakened squad available
Newcastle beat them 2-0 earlier in the season
Crystal Palace have won seven league matches this season, though five of those were in the first 11 matches, with only two following from the next 10.
Roy Hodgson will be scratching his head at how his side can improve, but knows that they must if they have any hopes of creeping into the top half this year.
Like Newcastle, Palace also lost a key player at the weekend with midfielder James McCarthy set for some time out on the treatment table.
This side can certainly cause The Magpies some problems, with Zaha, Eze and potentially new signing Mateta all quality options up front.
Star Man – Eberechi Eze
The attacking midfielder continued his fine debut season with the winner against Wolves at the weekend.
Will be a tight game
Neither side will be super confident despite recent wins
Even possession between the teams
Both Newcastle and Crystal Palace are far better in attacking areas than they are at the back, however have found it difficult to create clear goalscoring opportunities for themselves this season.
In Wilson, Saint-Maximin, Zaha and Eze, the players on the pitch have the ability to create chances, though this is likely to be a tight game with neither wanting to suffer defeat so quickly after tasting victory.
A draw seems most likely.
Newcastle 1-1 Crystal Palace
